Rise Of The Tomb Raider’s DLC Season Pass And Microtransactions Detailed

If you thought that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be released without a post-release DLC season pass in the pipeline, you’ve got another thing coming. Three releases are planned, to an Endurance Mode to the campaign, give you a new tomb to explore in Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, and fight against waves of infected enemies in Cold Darkness Awakened.

However, there’s also the game’s Expedition Cards system, which is intended to add to the game’s replay value once you’re done with the plain single player story. Extra modes include Score Attack lets you replay levels, Remnant Resistance has you revisiting hub spaces, and you can create your own missions with different objectives, enemies and so on, to play and challenge your friends to beat your score – this functionality comes in lieu of a traditional head-to-head multiplayer mode.

The Expedition Cards seem to tie in with the latter mission and challenge creation, as modifiers that give you everything from Big Head Mode to bullet resistance or increased difficulty. They also come in two forms, with common cards good for a single use while foil cards can be used repeatedly.

However, they are bought in packs using in game credits that you earn from completing challenges or buy using microtransactions and real money. That last point is particularly worrying, given that this is a single player only game, but how galling this ends up being will depend on how easy it is to earn credits through simply playing the game and how pervasive these microtransactions are.

  1. I don’t care about the expedition cards as long as i can enjoy the game without ever seeing a single prompt or message about them.

    • Doesn’t seem like they’ll have any impact on simply playing through the story.

      • That should suit me but it will still be interesting to see how it’s implemented.

    • I’m just going to just wait and get it on PS4. It will likely come. Even with all this and be cheaper and better looking to boot.

  2. Sounds quite like the burn cards from titanfall. Fortunately it doesn’t look like they’ll be needed for the campaign, just the dlc modes.

  3. Microtransactions in a Tomb Raider game?! Season pass? Waves of infected? It’s even worse than I imagined.

What next, Topless Lara (for a fee…).

They should rename her Angus Croft because she’s nothing more than a cash cow to them by the sounds of it.

    • Nude Raider DLC expansion.

    • Well, since people didn’t want a multiplayer they had to get creative as to how they could fish for whales.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they released a “retro outfit” based on the old games. As in very revealing.

    • They’ll be after your first-born next.

*goes to register Womb Raider as a franchise*

      • You just know in reality that’s going to be the name of some sensationalised documentary.

  4. I’m only interested in the additional tomb, so I’ll be getting that separately.

  5. so, they’re putting in a card game where you pay real money for cards?

where have i seen that before.

    thanks Obama, i mean EA.

  6.
