Halo 5 Helped The Xbox One Outsell The PS4 In America Last Month

Xbox won?

The Xbox One’s strong list of exclusives for the end of 2015 seems to be paying dividends for Microsoft, as Halo 5 helped the Xbox One to be the best selling console in America last month, according to NPD sales statistics.

A statement issued by the company stated that sales were up 81% year on year, though how many consoles that actually is and how it compares to the PlayStation 4 is still an unknown, and these statistics only pertain one market in the world. Microsoft quite naturally expects that Rise of the Tomb Raider will help them to retain the top spot in November.

Overall, console sales rose by 3%, but the 12% rise in current gen consoles was masked by a 66% tumble in last gen sales.

Underscoring the importance of exclusives, the top ten games chart had Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection in 9th place, behind Yoshi’s Wooly World – a game which released in the EU in June, but in NA last month.

  1. Halo 5: Guardians (XBO)
  2. NBA 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  3. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (PS4, XBO)
  4. Madden NFL 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  5. WWE 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  6. FIFA 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  7. Destiny: The Taken King (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
  8. Yoshi’s Wooly World (NWU)
  9. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (PS4)
  10. Rock Band 4 (XBO, PS4)

The fact that this is news shows the current state of the xbox one. If Halo hadn’t cause the rise of xbox sales in America on the month it came out I would be shocked.

Still, this and tomb raider make me wish I had an xbox one. The fact that majority of all other games can either be payed on ps4 or PC, I just can’t justify another console. I barely justified the PC!

PC has porn and the internet. I’m sure that beats everything the PS4 and X1 has. That and cat videos! :D

I seem to be in a fairly silly yet immature mood today.

Yeah but the PC is the masterfwap platform as you can mod your PC to show even more boobies in HD! Add more monitors! More tissues and more lube! the mouse is easy to replace if it gets too sticky!

Interesting to see Rock Band 4 make it into the top ten – will it have been discounted already? Or is it more popular in the States?

I think this pattern of ps4 winning most months and xbox getting the later ones will continue for a few years with the way they both release their big games.

I think you’re right but personally, if I only had one console, I’d prefer having exclusives spread out over the year rather than everything at once. There are already so many great third party games that come out around Christmas, how are you supposed to play them all or find time to enjoy them properly?

I think next year will be a big year for the PS4. So many great games coming out (FINALLY) after being pushed back again and again.

Both have their advantages for sure. The good thing with MS strategy is when you get round to the other games they’re inevitably cheaper. With PS I guess it’s nice to have a big game to look forward to every few months.

Personally can’t stand Q1 and early Q2 releases. Perhaps it’s because I’m so busy during that time of the year, but I much prefer all the juicy releases being toward the end of the year, and then I can choose what I most like and pick out the rest cheapish in the new year.

Plus there’s something about being more active in Spring/Summer, watching sport, getting out and about and what not. I much prefer to be heavy gaming with the new releases in the early darkness of autumn/winter.

*gasps* You mean the strongest franchise Microsoft owns helped to sell their console!? This is unheard off! Stop the presses!

Snark aside, it’s unsurprising as Halo has been a system seller since day one but it seems to have split it’s fanbase due to the quality. All of this is based on a review i watched. The mere fact that this had to be reported is not a good sign for Microsoft. Ironically, Tomb Raider, the game that was made a timed exclusive to go head to head with Uncharted is no longer going one on one with uncharted. Shame, as i would have loved to see which game could do in the sales charts. I am doubtful that Tomb Raider will help to maintain the spot as a lot of folks are very peed off at the fact that it’s a time exclusive and well, Fallout 4 was just released, COD:BLOPS 3 was released. It has a giant battle ahead of it.

I’m not really sure it ‘had’ to be reported. I found it just a case of the usual ‘companies revealing shipping/sales figures for publicity’, pretty similar to how Sony’s PS4 shipping figures have been publicised in the past, and likewise with Bethesda and Fallout 4.

The idea that Halo 5 helped XB1 sales figures is a logical one, but MS’s statement (in fact nothing I’ve seen so far) doesn’t quite say Halo 5 was the sole reason for sales increase. Really it’s just multiple releases that have contributed to it, along with specialised bundles for North America and the newly arrived UI and so forth. You could phrase it anyway really. TSA have done it one way, but someone like Gamespot had the headline something along the lines of ‘Despite PS4 price cut, Xbox one tops US console sales in October’. Whatever goes, MS at least have made some sort of progress and it is news because we just all know it hasn’t been a good run for MS. There’s no point in us being coy about the fact that XB1 was decimated by PS4 in sales in the first year. But now they’re in recovery, to me that’s news.

Incorrect Coward. Sony always combine the vita/psp/pstv figures on their financial reports.

@AngryCoward I always take this into account when reading any reviews of the big releases. The big gaming sites are so obviously influenced by the fear of loosing future review copies of games, exlusive interviews and invites to private events, you cant take a single word they write seriously. It’s how fifa, cod, gta get rave or sympathetic reviews from the big sites every year. You get some actual truth (or overly critical opinions) from them when its a small studio or a studio they couldnt give a crap about.

As if any of the big gaming sites would ever give GTA a bad review. Even after the pile of crap that was GTA5. It had a 10 before most of them even played it, I imagine.

Look at MS policy on indie games. Release it on Playstation first and you’ll NEVER release it on Xbox platforms. You think this bullish attitude doesnt influence the big gaming sites… They have too much to loose by risking upsetting the mighty MS.

I feel that GTA5 earnt it’s review scores unless you meant the online portion. Then i have no comment.

Whilst i don’t doubt there are sites that kiss ass, TSA is not one of them and it is really not a common thing to see in the gaming media. Every review is just a professional opinion. MS’s policy has bitten them in the ass as many indie developers got fed up and used Sony or Ninty. Some even blew the whistle on the nature of XBL.

Most sites do get advance copies so they techincally did review it before anyone play it and bare in mind that some reviews only contain a small portion of playtime. It’s usually enough to form a review. I mean, GTA5 is a huge game and i would not be surprised if some reviews were based on 6 hours at least.

MS and Sony may have lied with sales figures but they are unlikely to go “Ok, we got our asses kicked by our rival this month and lost a lot of cash.” They will spin it to be positive.

@The Lone Steven, I dont mean TSA do this. I’m talking about the top 4-5 gaming sites who reap many benefits from keeping the ‘friendship’ between big developers sweet. Imagine if they gave the latest COD a 5 or a 4 for being exactly the same game as last year. It is just one persons opinion after all, but it would not happen. The higher ups wouldnt allow it. They arent going to risk the ‘friendship’ or the benefits that come with it. No way they would give one of the most popular franchises a poor review. It would cost them too much.

Its the smaller gaming websites where you find the most honest reviews.

Try reading it again, properly this time “combined sales for the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation TV were 3.3 million (down from 4.1 million)”… And you have the cheek to label me an idiot, you can’t even read a simple article.

Really don’t get all these inter console arguments or “fanboyism” as some would say.
I’d have them all if possible money permitting!

It’s horse’s for courses and a choice usually has to be made as to which direction you go brand wise due to financial restriction but let’s be honest, everything on offer is pretty remarkable including the Ninty effort.

Maybe it’s justification of purchase that causes these type of arguments.

      Getting coat :P
