What We Played #229: Fallout 4, Tomb Raider & Need For Speed

Would you Adam and Eve it? People have been playing as much Fallout 4 as they possibly can since its release on Tuesday. Of course, Dave had quite a bit of a head start, as the staffer tasked with reviewing the game, but he also found time to complete and review Rise of the Tomb Raider, has been playing Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. for a preview, and returned to Jet Set Radio Future on his Xbox 360, which he says is in desperate need of a remake.

Mark’s another one who’s been stepping out into the sunlight, loving the first few hours of Fallout 4 an thoroughly enjoying the crafting system and building up his Sanctuary. Between that and Tomb Raider, he’s set for gaming until the end of the year. Miguel has also been juggling Fallout 4 playtime with Danganronpa which, while he loves a bit of Danganronpa, is a little on the long side of things.

Jim’s once again been playing an awful lot of games. Yes, there was an early introduction to the world of Fallout 4, but he’s largely spent his time with The Witcher 3, as well as reviewing Rodea the Sky Soldier, FORCED, Poncho and The Room Three, with only the latter really doing enough to impress him. Finally, he conquered Kyrat in Far Cry 4, and you can expect to hear a little something about Blizzard’s Overwatch in the not too distant future.

Dom’s actually the only respondent not to have been playing Fallout 4, but has instead spent time speeding through Need for Speed for our review earlier this week – he seemed to enjoy it a lot more than the commenters did. You can also get his impressions from the first few hours of Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U, and read about the wonderful homage that is the Doctor Who level pack for Lego Dimensions.

Last but not least, I’ve had a mixed up week of gaming. Black Ops 3 featured over the weekend, as I dove into the multiplayer and levelled up to unlock a particular specialist. There was also a spot of co-op campaign, which once again revealed just how easily co-op can dismantle and deconstruct the work done when trying to tell a story.

BlizzCon also inspired me to open up Battle.net and see if the Overwatch beta had been added to my account – it hadn’t – and finally try out Hearthstone, which was really good until you come up against opponents with decks and card that are much better than my own. And I’ve also been playing StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void and Telltale’s adventure games, more of which you’ll hear next week.

And now it’s over to you. What have you been playing? What trophies have you earnt? How many hours of Fallout 4 have you already managed?

  1. Completed Wolfenstein:The Old Blood, was a bit uninspiring to start with but got better towards the end with the occult, especially after the straight laced story of The New Order – it’s just not Wolfenstein without tech and the occult! Dunno whether I’ll bother going for the plat on that one though.

Played Tales from the Borderlands Ep1 and can’t wait for the season pass to be on offer so I can continue that. Also been playing The Walking Dead Season Two…

Now I should have been playing Fallout4 since Tuesday and amassing double digit hours by now, but Tesco Direct are utter shite and only delivered it this morning.

After last nights OMG Walking Dead Ep4 ending though do I finish it off with Ep5 tonight, or finally get to play Fallout?!!

  2. Played through and platinumed Adventure Time: Finn and Jake Investigations over the weekend.
The usual Borderlands 2 co-op with Forrest and Pixel.
I’ve gone back to Driveclub to do the dlc tours.
    Some Guitar Hero Live.

No Fallout for me, didn’t really get into Fallout 3 on PS3 so it’s highly unlikely 4 would change my mind.

  3. Need for Speed which is fun apart from when the servers go down or when your AI teammates decide to turn it into a destruction derby, and now Rise of the tomb raider, which is ace, the crafting is good & there’s much less combat areas than the shown footage suggested, which is nice.

  4. Black Ops 3, Rocket League, FIFA 16 and Need for Speed.

Still loving Rocket League and especially good for filling the odd half-hour here and there.

Enjoying Black Ops 3’s campaign and zombies, although multiplayer is a bit dull imo. The classes aren’t significant enough to add much, and the maps are rather boring. I actually miss Advanced Warfares’ Exo suit by comparison.

Still dipping into NFS, desire it’s flaws. Hoping for updates to add content, so am stalling on it a bit (see what I did there)!

Pro Clubs royally screwed me over last night. AI defenders doing nothing or giving away penalties in the last minute. I think we conceded 4 goals in various games between 89th-93rd minute, costing us points.

Despite my Pip-Boy Edition arriving, I have no intention of starting Fallout 4 until I have completed MGS: TPP. I can’t afford to have two epic-long games on the go at once!

  5. Been playing Need For Speed (Got the Platinum) and Fifa. Started Assassins Creed Syndicate 3hrs ago and loving it although too much information pouring in right at the start and it is very rushed but still enjoy it nonetheless as there are new features added to the game.
Same as Youles on Fallout 4 got the Pip Boy Edition (Loving it) bit won’t start until I complete Syndicate.

  6. Only Fallout 4 for me since Monday.
It’s glitchy, buggy as hell, has a naff story, looks and plays decidedly last gen (at least when I compare it to Witcher 3 and Bloodborne which were the last games I played) but I’m really really enjoying it. I’ve messed up spending my perks so I’ve decided to get through the main story and then I’ll start again to try a different build and aim for the Platinum.

    • This is me being rather petty and i apologise for it but how the hell does it look like a last gen game? It’s looks amazing! Again, sorry for nitpicking. Just fed up of people claiming it looks like a last gen game when it doesn’t.

Guess i’ll join Tuffcub on the naughty step now.

      • No need to apologise.

For me I just think the textures lack definition. It all seems a little bit ‘flat’ (I’m not sure that’s exactly the description I’m looking for) in character in my opinion.
Maybe my expectations were too high.

      • It just annoys me that people are comparing it to last gen as i am still in the last gen and i can confirm that it does not look like a last gen game. That and personally, i find that people who view graphics as a number 1 thing in massive open world RPGs to be a bit of er…. annoying as graphics usually have to be scaled back in order to deliever a lot of content. Ok, Witcher 3 did amazing graphics but i think CD Projeck red had enough time and planning to put everything they wanted in whilst not being hampered by their engine having to be modified.

Damnit, i’ve gone a bit of a rant. Sorry, just a bit of a pet peeve it seems when people complain about graphics for fallout 4 or massive open world RPGs despite the fact that most of the time, graphics have to take a minor backseat due to the sheer amount of work involved with games like these.

That and i hate it when people go “ew, that’s sucks. It’s old, it’s an old game and suxs.” based on graphics. Man, i’m becoming a grumpy young gamer. :O

      • Ha ha :) rant away mate. That’s the whole point of comments pages.
I’m now nearly 48hrs in to Fallout 4 and fair enjoying it so I’m certainly not knocking the game. I also agree about graphics not being No1 most important thing and I don’t intend to sound all precious in my whinge. Just thought that visually it’d have more depth/warmth about it.

  7. Fallout 4. Sadly not got much good to say about it though. It’s basically a way more boring version of Borderlands. The controls suck, the map (on the pip boy) is simply awful, it’s overly complicated for no real reason and without very good tutorials. All the quests I’ve done so far have been dreadful. I’ve played for about 8 hours and gonna stick with it for a while longer. Hopefully it’s get less boring.

    • Btw, I played Borderlands single player and Borderlands 2 co-op.

  8. Not much time for gaming this week, got a little closer to the end of The Witcher 3.. but then somehow found myself in possession of a copy of Fallout 4 after a brief stroll through town, so now i’ve started that. Not done much yet, as i’ve been distracted by the settlement building feature – Is there no sanctuary for a recovering Minecraft addict?!

  9. I have been playing Fallout New Vegas for most of October. Fantastic game and what i feel should be a modern Fallout game. Yes, it did crash a few times but lag always warned me when it was about to crash thus saving and rebooting the game prevented plenty of crashes. Got to the 80 point where i realised that i wasted too many perks and the character was derailed. Restarted, realised i burnt out on Fallout so i became the goddamn BATMAN!

Played Arkham Origins and whilst it is a disappointment if you have played the first two games, it is a wonderful entry and gives City a run for it’s batcash with it’s boss battles.Loved what they did with Bane and whilst it isn’t really Year one of Batman. It is mostly a prequel to the whole Arkham Asylum premise not Batman. Played Ayslum and yeah, the gameplay is dated due to the improvements City had. Completed Asylum and i am not ashamed to admit that i did take a few upskirt looks of Harley Quinn. What? She is in a sexy outfit. That is not sexist or part of Gamerga…. hang on, too soon. I best grab this joke and take it out back before i get into trouble for making light of what happened.

basically, fanservice reasons. Anyway, after Ayslum, started on City and have played a bit of the Ratchet and Crank Trilogy. Just can’t commit to a proper playthrough for some reason. I should love the games as i spent many hours during my teen years on 3(and raging a lot when i sucked at boss battles) but it’s not clicking for some reason.

I do get the feeling that if any of my comments are picked for the chronicle, it’s going to be this one just because of reasons. :p

Oh and i am considering playing FC4 after City. But i own the “Oh my god, what did they do to the cover art, batman!?” edition. I mean, i think Rocksteady or Warner are trying to tell me that it won some kind of award. If only, they could tell me. If only, they plastered it everywhere.

  10. Driveclub, nothing else, as those challenges are quite addictive. And Blast71 keeps them coming, and usually, I haven’t got much of a chance, except in some of the Drift ones. Today, I took the lead in a challenge about 20 min before the end, but he still managed to snatch it off me…

    • You’ve definitely got me on the drifting challenges but I can still hold my own on the time trials ;)
Good battle last night in the Ferrari ;)

      • Yeah, that was good fun..! Except for the fact I didn’t win the challenge… ;o)
