Naughty Dog: “This Is The End For Nathan Drake”

Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann has dropped a rather large hint that Nathan Drake may not make it out of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End in one piece.

“He’s at the height of his popularity, so it’s not a good business decision. But I feel like the best way to honour him is to go out on top, to finish his story,” he told The Sun. “But with the end of this story, it will be really hard to do a sequel with Nathan Drake.”

“Whether that’s it for Uncharted? I don’t know. At the end of the day Sony owns Uncharted and they can do whatever they want,” he adds. “Maybe there’ll be a prequel, maybe it will be a different character, I don’t know, but this is the end for Nathan Drake.”

Well that seems rather final, and no doubt when Naughty Dog are sold to Disney in thirty years time the first thing they will do is commission a raft of new Uncharted games, but for now this does appear to be the end.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was recently delayed by a few weeks and will land exclusively on PlayStation 4 on April 27th.

  1. It does seem a shame to end it this generation after just one game but i’m sure Naughty Dog must be itching to move on to new projects.

  2. I’m pretty confident that we’ll atleast see “Uncharted Collection – The 4K Collection” on PS5.

Feeling pretty sad to know that the next game is the final Drake story though, I like that guy.

  3. I’m guessing he dies then at the end of 4. Cause after Indiana Jones 3, I couldn’t see it going anywhere else but since they didn’t kill Indy they is now number 5 in the making.

    • Wow! Indy 5 is in the making?!! Did not know this, please tell Shia laFlute is not taking over the mantel!

      • nah hes not. They said the only person who can be Indiana Jones is Harrison Ford… so who knows what is going to happen

      • Monkey swinging aside, I didnt mind Shia in Indy 4.

      • Don’t know what it is about Shia, just can’t stand him!

  4. I simply can’t see Naughty Dog killing off Nate, as that would be far too obvious. Ever since Sam was introduced as a character, I’ve had a theory that he’ll be the one to die; he might even be the thief of the game’s title.

  5. It think he’ll have a similar style end to Ezio in assassins creed, in that he’ll die, but it’ll be peacefully at a old age rather than some dramatic shootout. I could see another Uncharted with a young Sully as the main character. Origin prequels do seem to be popular at the moment.

  6. I think ‘Nathan Drake the adventurer’ will die (didn’t they hint that his name isn’t really Drake in Uncharted 3?) but whatever his real name is will go on to live a normal life on a farm or something, with his girl (Chloe).

  7. Maybe he just loses a leg or something.

All that wall-climbing and platforming would be pretty tough on crutches.

I don’t want to see Drake, Sully or Elena die, but wouldn’t be too upset if Chloe, Charlie, Nate’s brother Sam or the new girl in #4 bought the farm.

  8. The cast is getting old in 4. But there’s nothing stopping them from making prequels (and inbetweeners) like The Golden Abyss.

  9. Hope the franchise finishes with this one. Naughty Dog appear to be a studio with some genuine conviction and they’ll want to move on to the next appealing franchise, surely. They have some of the brightest and best people working for them and there is no way in hell that they’ll want to be stuck on the same project/franchise year in, year out.

  10. It’s a fresh of breath air to see a studio knowing when to end a story instead of dragging it out and Uncharted 4 should be their best work yet. Regarding the UC franchise.

I can see Drake just getting fed up of almost dying several times and deciding to retire. Sully’s old. Drake has to be pushing 40 at least or mid 40s. His body must be nearing the point where he is no longer capable of doing what he does. I can see the franchise surviving without Drake and it is an option ND will most likely leave open but i would imagine they are getting a bit bored with Uncharted thus wanting to move onto other works.

It could result in The Last of Us becoming the new focus for Naughty Dog or another new I.P. :)

If Disney does buy out ND, then it’ll be Darth Drake that appears in the sequels.
