Rocket League Was The Best Selling PlayStation Store Game Of 2016

Jingle Balls

Considering that Rocket League was given away for free as part of PlayStation Plus it is rather astounding that it has topped the charts and become the  best selling game on the PSN during 2016. That said, the game was on PS+ when there was a mere 20 million PlayStation 4’s in the wild, there are 23 million more potential buyers these days.

It also appears that the transition from boxed to digital products for full price titles is in full swing in Europe with FIFA 17. Battlefield 1, Uncharted 4, and Destiny all doing well, and cutting the price of Battlefield 4 to below a fiver has made it race ahead of the pack and claim third place.

Here is the full 2016 PlayStation 4 PSN chart for Europe:

  1. Rocket League
  2. Fifa 17
  3. Battlefield 4
  4. Battlefield 1
  5. Destiny: Rise of Iron
  6. Grand Theft Auto V
  7. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

  16. Hitman
  17. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  18. Star Wars Battlefront
  19. Ratchet & Clank
  20. Far Cry Primal

Ark: Survival Evolved topped the chart for December, and PlayStation VR Worlds, which has been on sale for a few weeks, moved to first place in the PS VR chart. As you can see, Ark also made it to number 11 in the chart of 2016 so it must have sold bucketloads in the last few weeks of the year.

Over in the states Rocket League claimed the top spot once again for the overall chart of 2016, but Call of Duty and The Division gained higher placings charting in fourth and fifth place respectively. Overwatch and No Man’s Sky also charted in the states but not in Europe. It appears our love for a bargain (Battlefield Hardline, Need for Speed etc) has pushed some of the bigger release from this year off the top twenty. Here is the full top twenty for 2016 for North America.

  1. Rocket League
  2. Battlefield 1

It’s very well deserved in my opinion. It’s a fantastic game and was well supported by DLC throughout the year that was reasonably priced and enjoyable. The online community is really strong and I’ve never had an issue finding a match. Considering I hate football but played this so much I didn’t even realize when the platinum popped says something about its quality and gameplay. Just my 2 cents.

Totally with you, a well deserved win for Psyonix, congrats to them! It was a polished piece of work from the word go and has only gotten better with DLC, which I’ve bought a bit off but I must buy more. Good to see GTA V still hanging in the top ten too, amazing stuff, I wonder how many helicopters and bulletproof cars the Rockstar guys have bought with all their earnings?

That’s a very impessive start for Ark Survival Evolved, i’ll have to try and make time for it at some point.
