Pokémon Go Is Getting Group Raid Battles & Improved Gyms

The Boss will be pleased.

On the cusp of celebrating its first anniversary, Pokémon Go is getting a big update to some of its core gameplay, as Niantic have revealed plans to overhaul the Gym system and add in cooperative Raid Battles to the game.

Gyms in particular have been a rather exclusive and tricky side to the game, always feeling out of reach to all but a dedicated few. The new system will make it much more collaborative, with six permanent slots that can be filled with the controlling team’s Pokémon. Those Pokémon are now to be fought in the order they’re added, instead of in order of Combat Power, and they lose motivation the longer they’re guarding a gym, making them easier to defeat over time. To help defend your gym, you’ll be able to feed Pokémon berries to keep them motivated.

Gyms will also all now act as PokéStops, but will distribute unique items, and players will receive Gym Badges as mementos that can be levelled up for increased rewards and bonus items.

Raid Battles are coming as a new co-op element in a separate update. You’ll be able to team up with others nearby to battle and try to defeat powerful Pokémon known as Raid Bosses – we’re talking CP in the 20-30,000 range! These are timed events which will take over a Gym, with players from all teams able to team up to try and take them down. You’ll earn special new items for doing so.

You’ll be able to create private groups with a code system so you can invite friends to a specific group, but teaming up with randoms nearby will be the bread and butter of this mode.

Is anyone still playing Pokemon Go? I haven’t heard someone mention it in at least 6 months…
