EA Won’t Be Making VR Games Until The Install Base Is Larger

The PlayStation VR mission that was added to Star Wars Battlefront is my go-to game when showing PlayStation VR to friends for the first time. As soon as the giant foot of AT-AT stomps down in front of them they are sold on the tech, so it’s disappointing to hear that EA won’t be making any more VR games, at least not yet.

Simply put, the company don’t think the install base is high enough to justify creating new title. Electronic Arts’ Laura Miele spoke to GI.biz about the tech and said the following:

VR will be an incredible step change at some point in the industry. It’s something that’s immersive and engaging, and it will continue to evolve. We need to see a larger install base, and I also think the industry–and EA is part of that–will continue to work on engaging experiences. We continue to work on it internally. We’re watching the marketplace and install base and technology evolution of the hardware providers. We believe in it, but we need the market to grow.

However, Miele insisted that EA still believes in VR’s long-term potential.

  1. “However, Miele insisted that EA still believes in VR’s long-term potential.”

Just not enough to invest all those millions they earn from yearly sports games updates into the tech.

  2. Booooooo to EA!

  3. Surely this is an ominous sign if one of the largest publishers out there doesn’t want to take on the risk? And it’s not as if Sony are pumping out first party AAA VR games to fill the gap either.

    • It’s still an acquired taste. Until the headsets get wireless and cheaper, I don’t think VR will be widely adopted enough.

Might help if next gen Sony account for VR in their console design. It would be far better if PSVR 2 is an accessory, not a platform. If major game engine developers integrate VR as a readily accessible option, game developers can create projects that are compatible with both TV and VR. Then there would be more games available.

      • Resident Evil 7 show us that shooting in both directions just doesn’t work. While being awesome TV game Resi 7 is worst VR experience ever, with clumsy controls and abominable cut-scene events.
In order to be really good, VR game must be designed especially for VR and for VR only

      • You’re forgetting PCars and Elite on PC. Both games do both outputs very well.

      • Resi 7 is awesome in VR, controls are fine. Shush.

  4. It’s a bit annoying, one Star Wars X Wing dogfight game for PlayStation VR and they could shift millions of headsets.

    • Yeah, super simple game, Star Wars fans would go nuts for it, almost definitely profitable, premium price not a problem. Come on EA.

  5. Pretty lame, but EA have never been known for being especially innovative. So, they happily continue to play it safe, take no to little risk and harvest massive profits from boring and repetitive, but selling iterations of the same games.

  6. That’s a shame, a few officially licenced VR sports games or experiences would probably have broadened VR’s appeal.
