SMS Clarify That Project Cars 2 Won’t Be True 4K Or 60FPS On Xbox One X

Slightly Mad Studios’ Game Director Stephen Viljoen was quoted as saying that Project Cars 2 was will be running in native 4K and 60fps on Xbox One X yesterday  which made people happy, but it turns out that is not the case.

“It’s news to me,” posted Slightly Mad’s Ian Bell on the GTPlanet forums when the quote surfaced. “Yup, this was a misquote. We’re running sub 60 FPS at 4K and we’ll probably always be unless we drop livetrack and a host of other things… We’ll probably upscale from something very reasonable.”

“We don’t like the term ‘locked’,” he added in reference to the frame rate. “It would put us in first party territory where chest beating is more important than a great experience. We’ll be 60 most of the time in normal racing and we’ll push the consoles to and beyond their limits for more interesting racing. Even if that means dropping a few frames.”

The specs for the PlayStation 4 Pro version of the game have not been revealed but you can bet they won’t be true 4K or 60FPS either.

  1. It doesn’t surprise me a whole lot, seems like X1X might be suffering from the similar problem as PS4 Pro is – bottlenecking in the CPU department.

    • Yeah, the CPU will be a bottleneck at times, but it’s also down to game design choices with first party devs more likely to get the very best out of a console and design their game to its limits. It’ll be very interesting to see how Forza 7, GT Sport and Project Cars 2 stack up this year.

  2. Not really a surprise, the xbox one X is powerful, but it’s still considerably less powerful than the top tier desktop graphics cards required to run games at 4k/60fps with high details, even considering ‘console optimisations’.

  3. Nice to read, actually. Put the game first and don’t get hung-up on the technical specs too much (unless they’re starting to harm the game). I appreciate that near-as-dammit frame-rate is important in racers but we’ve seen great racing games at all manner of fps.

Good luck to them on making it look awesome on the XOX.
