What We Played #318 - Monster Hunter XX, Agents Of Mayhem & Graceful Explosion Machine

Busy bees.

It’s been a super busy one at the Leighton house, with birthdays and bereavements making for a really very mixed week. On the gaming front I’ve been playing the Monster Hunter XX demo on Switch – in Japanese – but thanks to having played the 3DS version of Generations it’s not been too hard to navigate, and I’ve been using my phone to translate it with the super smart image translate. I think I’ll probably pick it up, even without an announcement of a Western release, and it’s a great feather in the Switch’s cap to be region free!

Besides that, I’m working on the review for Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth which is proving to be an authentic rendition of the book so far, and I also reviewed Sine Mora EX earlier in the week. Finally it’s been some Splatoon 2 when I’ve had a spare minute or two.

Kris was the first to drop in this week, and he’s been playing more PPKP on iOS, a two button, timing-based brawler with some light town management stuff thrown in. He’s also tried his hand at Colorcube which is a colour and shape based puzzle game, and dabbled in some D&D too.

Jake has played a bit of Yooka-Laylee in order to check out the new spit n polish patch, which is apparently exactly what the game needed and it’s noticeably better. Earlier in the week he played some Death Squared on the Switch with a few friends, which was pretty fun and he’s also just started a slightly more difficult version of Pokémon Heart Gold for YouTube, which he’s really looking forward to in order to see the new things the game has compared to the original!

Aran started on Horizon Zero Dawn and is really enjoying exploring the world thanks to it being so well constructed. He’s also started Agents Of Mayhem for review which he’ll talk about more next week! Miguel has meanwhile been losing himself to the Overwatch summer event, dabbled a little bit in White Day for PS4, and continued his playthrough of Muramasa Remastered.

TC has had a busy one, playing The Long Dark, which caused him a few problems, Graceful Explosion Machine, Titanfall 2 with its super-fun new co-op mode and just got to reviewing Housemarque’s new game, Matterfall.

Lastly, for this week, Tef sunk a lot of time into the Splatoon 2 Splatfest last weekend, and has continued to play what is becoming his multiplayer game of the year so far, despite its flaws. Alongside that, he’s played the sublime Rez Infinite as it’s come to PC, reviewed the first episode of Batman: The Enemy Within, and played a couple of games that Green Man Gaming are publishing, called WTF and JackHammer, both of which you’ll hear about soon.

Now then, what have you played?

Hm, I’m not finding too much time for gaming these days which is a little frustrating.

I am playing Fortnite though when I get a chance and I’m quite enjoying that now that I’m over the first 5 or so hours which were extremely difficult to understand. Once you start getting to grips with the different systems though it becomes fun.

Same as always, slowly getting through the backlog.

But with a lot of CoD due to the bundle from the sale last week. Infinite Warfare was an excellent single player campaign (especially Ethan and all the spaceships obviously being influenced by Battlestar Galactica), entertaining multiplayer (more fun than BF1, because I’m crap and die lots and can respawn nice and quickly), and zombies is going to entertain me for months. It’s the most fun zombies mode ever.

And I was surprised how good the remastered Modern Warfare looks, even if the gameplay is showing it’s age. I’m going to get through it on stupidly hard mode (which isn’t actually that hard if you avoid bullets, I guess. Which is the tricky bit)

I also remembered I’d got Megadimension Neptunia VII in a sale as well, and forgot to really start playing.

And NMS for the weekend, I guess. It was going to be For Honor, with the weekend trial, but after a 50GB download, I realised that while there’s a good game in there somewhere, a stupidly long tutorial (or “story” mode) and then broken multiplayer isn’t a great combination.

I rarely play during the week but I’ve put in a little more co-op time with Wildlands which is the only way to play it.

Dying Light also found its way on to my system thanks to iZombie and I have to say I’m having more fun playing now than when it was first released.

I was away at a family gathering most of the week so i didn’t get to play anything beyond a few snatches of Neon Chrome. This weekend and for a chunk of the foreseeable future will be all NMS.

A bit of Zelda this week, lots of work and a mate’s wedding yesterday. I’ve spent this afternoon at my sister in laws playing 1-2-Switch with my nieces and nephew, it’s ridiculous fun. I’m not sure the game would have much longevity with adults but the kids’ imaginations really added to the experience. Mario Kart for us all tomorrow!

Finished Dishonored 2 (Emily play through). Great game. So glad I decided to stick with the first game when I wasn’t feeling it. The second game is so much better. Can’t wait for the spin off.

Tearaway Unfolded. I feel bad for not loving these games (they’re really well made) but I just find them so dull. The art style, the character models, the voices… can only be described as drab. Don’t even get me started on the pan pipes.

That’s the second thing that’s reminded me I should finish Dishonored 2 in the past week or so. The other being the guy who did the music for both games (and the TV series Dexter) dying.

But I’m struggling with it. It’s just not as good as the first one. Although that clockwork mansion thing is just wonderfully designed.

The clockwork mansion was great but there’s a level later in the game where you have the ability to switch between two different time frames at will. It was the highlight of the game for me. I don’t think I’ve ever played anything like it before.

Death of the Outsider can’t come soon enough.
