Microsoft Address Complaints Surrounding Forza 7's VIP Membership Changes

Three point turn.

One of the more divisive aspects of Forza Motorsport 7 has been its play for microtransactions via race-altering mods and the effect it has had on the VIP membership benefits – it’s something we were concerned about in our review. Instead of a blanket boost to the in-game currency that you would earn, VIP would only come with five mods that could be used to boost five races each, which was not made clear in the run up to launch.

Thankfully, Microsoft and Turn 10 have found that this wasn’t going down well with the community and reacted fairly quickly, as detailed in a blog post. They’re working to restore the VIP rewards so that they work exactly as they did in Forza Motorsport 6 with a 2x credit bonus after every race.

In the meantime, all VIP members are getting 1 million credits to spend as they see fit, and four additional Forza Edition cars:

  • 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE Project 7 Forza Edition
  • 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Forza Edition
  • 2017 Acura NSX Forza Edition
  • 2010 Maserati Gran Turismo S Forza Edition
In this open letter to the community, Alan Hartman, Turn 10 Studio Head said, “The most important thing to us is to maintain open communication with the Forza Community,” later saying that “As head of the studio, I apologize for any confusion or frustration our players may have experienced.”

Finally, the letter addresses PC stability and performance, and while there’s a lot of positive things coming from benchmarks with mid-high end PCs getting excellent performance and 4K60 racing well within reach, there have been people reporting stability and performance issues. Turn 10 have already released their first update to the game on PC and will continue to find and fix issues.

    It’s been baffling to see people concerned about this in reviews and forums. Past racing games have had microtransactions, but they haven’t been particularly intrusive in those games, and it’s no different with FM7. Nothing is blocked off except for cosmetics/mods.

    Even more puzzling is it all seems to revolve around the VIP pass not giving a 2x boost, but instead leaving boosts to be obtained in loot crates. The VIP pass was a rip off to begin with tbf, blocking select cars and 2x credit boost behind a £15 pass was nonsense, especially when GT6 gave a 2x boost just for logging in 5 times in a row.

    Then people are also complaining turning assists off doesn’t give a credit boost anymore, despite the fact that difficulty levels now give twice the credit boost vs FM6.

    For feck sake, all this waffle over credits and you can earn them super easy if you just play the game and get on with it.

    Quite why it’s all become an issue has just gone right over my head. The ability to use real cash isn’t even there at the moment.

      On the real cash front Turn 10 have said the micro transactions are definitely coming – but I think the whole VIP thing is that players have still turned in their money expecting the same kind of boosts they’ve received in previous years but haven’t.

      The VIP pass has always been about speeding up your ability to buy cars and progress as you see fit, while the form it was released in Forza 7 didn’t give you that permanently. For all that the whole thing might have been a rip-off in the past, by taking away the permanent boost it became even more of a rip-off!

      The VIP pass is for people who don’t want to “just play the game and get on with it”, they want to speed through it, and FM7 in its vanilla form limits that progression, particularly if you don’t fancy using mods that make you play in cockpit view etc.

        I completely get the regulars who buy in to the VIP pass and the uproar about the changes, but there seems to be more people out there complaining about the loot boxes outside of the VIP controversy. That’s the bit I’m most puzzled about!

        I know the microtransactions are definitely coming, but they are in sooo many games right now, but it’s all optional. People are treating it like it’s outrageous and not optional. There’s loot boxes in Destiny, Overwatch, GoW4, Halo, Battlefield, Rocket League, Forza 6, and loads of other games. They even featured in Modern Warfare remastered and people didn’t like it, but again it was cosmetic and to an extent optional.

        I feel like I’m missing something vital from the uproar over FM7, something that makes this use of loot boxes more toxic, but I can’t figure out what it is.

        Meanwhile I’m bemused by people who are avoiding games like this and Destiny over ‘having’ to pay for more content post-purchase when you don’t actually have to spend a penny.

        I think it’s about openness and getting the message out there. MS made the change to the VIP pass and didn’t tell anybody about it, so that combined with the mods system which was also an unexpected change to cash boosting led to a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths, amplified by the latent indignant rage of the internet in general.

        I can’t speak on behalf of this game but this sites terrible review of everybody’s Golf really riled me. It banged on about how microtransactions ruined the game when actually they make no difference whatsoever. I’m 2 trophies away from platinum on it and haven’t spent a penny, and won’t need to.
        Sorry if I’m off subject a little, but I guess my point is microtransactions are fine as long as they don’t interfere with the main game progress and are just an optional extra.

        @ badger I don’t believe that there is anything that can be bought for everybody’s golf anyway to be of advantage for progression of the game. A spare wardrobe of skirts or another course to play don’t really cut it.

        The gold power club set available for purchase is only available to use for au fait players that have naturally progressed to top tier ranking.

        I reached rank 7 but will very unlikely get that stupid condor shot…let alone three of them without a microtransaction superball!
