UK Charts 18/11/17: Star Wars Battlefront II Physical Sales Down 61% On Previous Game

Activision’s Call of Duty: WWII has fought of a fierce challenge from EA’s Star Wars Battlefront II and claimed a third week at the top of the UK charts. It’s a busy week with the Pokemon Ultra games taking fourth and fifth position, the console release of The Sims 4 at number seven, L.A. Noire Remastered dropping in at eighth position, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 rounding off the top ten.

Further down the chart Skyrim makes it’s third return to the charts in the shape of Skyrim VR for PlayStation VR at number nineteen, and then appears for the fourth time at number twenty-six on the back of the Switch version. Promotions for PlayStation VR mean that Sony’s Playstation VR Worlds also bounces back in to the charts.

UPDATE: According to GamesIndustry.Biz publisher Chris Dring, “Star Wars Battlefront II first week UK boxed sales are 61% down compared with Battlefront 1”, although digital sales are up around 30% compared to the first game. However, that does mean Battlefront II has sold 30% less that the original Battlefront in the first week.

Nice to see the threats of boycotting battlefront 2 were carried through. EA will have to strongly consider how they use loot boxes & micro transactions in future. Must be a good chance of it being discounted for black Friday now.

The damage has been a bit catastrophic in sales, not to mention the wrath they might incur from Disney having messed around with the Star Wars name like this.

It’s a bit of a shame as the game is rather superb in my opinion. Having played extensively with it now, star card progression seems woefully unbalanced more than any hero purchases, and it’s the impact of the loot boxes on star cards that needs to be addressed. Currently the progression is less than rewarding, and I can’t see any microtransactions improving the feeling.

It’s still a great game at heart, potentially the best Battlefront to date. But a rewarding progression system would’ve been the cherry on the top, and it’s that element that’s been expended at the cost of a rather bold attempt to milk more money.

I really hope that the executive typed draw the right conclusion. Confusing and slow progression aside the game is incredible and Criterion and Dice deserve huge praise for such a beautiful and fun creation, but loot-crate-gate has been a huge bird shit on the Ferraris bonnet.

Yeah I’ve no doubt it’s a great game aside from relying on chance to unlock your preferred loadouts.

I’ll be getting it at some point. It will be interesting what compromise EA decide on to try and pursuade those that they put off the game to change their mind.

Be careful not to choke on your aspirations, EA.

Wow, Destiny2 has plummeted down the charts. I was expecting it to hover around the top10 for several months. Same with South Park.

Glad to see people voting with their wallets when it comes to the new Star Wars. While I’m sure the game is ‘good’, there is no way micro-transaction systems like that should be supported.

I decided not to buy BF2 after playing the beta and realising that actually, as much as it’s much better than the first game, I still didn’t enjoy it that much because it has no domination mode (i.e. capturing and holding command posts) which was the base mode for the original games.
