Something For The Weekend – 16/12/17

Have yourself a lovely Star War.

So, Star Wars, eh? I imagine an awful lot of you are off to see The Last Jedi or have seen it already and everything I’ve heard about it is that it’s excellent. That’s great news and I’m really looking forward to seeing it for myself this afternoon.

In the News This Week

Games in Review

There’s only a handful of reviews this week as we catch up on releases from the last few weeks.

This Week’s Features

I’ve been back in Destiny 2 this week, after the release of the Curse of Osiris expansion. As seems typical for Bungie’s space opera shooter looter, I end up a bit disappointed by some parts of the game and the expansion… and then keep playing anyway. This isn’t the game at its best, but hopefully it’s foundations for the future.

In fact, I’ve had a surprisingly busy week. I also delved into PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One, and while it’s a lot of fun, found it to be rough around the edges. It is a Game Preview, but at the same time I find it a step too far for it to be sold in shops.

There was a good long 90 minutes spent playing Far Cry 5, finding a huge open world in which I barely scratched the surface of what it offers.

I also took a look at Kingdom Come: Deliverancethe ambitious medieval RPG from Warhorse Studios and fiddled with tons of variables in Total War: Warhammer II’s The Laboratory game mode. I mixed drinks and philosophies in the intriguing The Red Strings Cluband then returned to classic WWII shooters in VR with Front Defense: Heroes.

Ade continued his always entertaining Playing With History series, this time looking at Wolfenstein II and the Third Reich’s obsession with the occult, while Jim returned to the first two Syberia games as they came to Nintendo Switch.

Finally there was What We Played, featuring Destiny 2, Yakuza 0 and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

  • Tony C’s been playing Destiny 2 again. He really wants to play other games, but he just can’t.
  • ron_mcphatty’s unlocked all the characters in Star Wars Battlefront II, but really it’s all about watching The Last Jedi.
  • TSBonyman has let Christmas consume him. There’s been work Christmas drinks, catching up with friends and searching for presents. He did manage some Rush of Blood and Skyrim VR, though.
  • Andrewww’s festive season has included watching a lot of The Walking Dead and loving it. Sadly The Last Jedi didn’t click with him like previous films did.

Saw The Last Jedi today and thought it was absolutely fantastic. Expected very little of it (or the new trilogy) after TFA but this movie surprised me. Can’t wait for episode IX now!
