Cloud Gaming Specialist PlayFab Acquired By Microsoft

It's in the Cloud. Again.

Microsoft and the Cloud have had quite the mixed relationship. When the Xbox One was unveiled there was a big deal made about extra processing power being used from the Cloud to help makes game on the console run better, and Crackdown 3 is one of the games using the technology. But there hasn’t been much to see when it comes down to it. However Microsoft haven’t given up yet and as a result have acquired Cloud specialists PlayFab.

PlayFab is a company that provides services to help developers create games that are cloud connected, with tools that can be utilised for mobile, PC, and console gaming. PlayFab will be used in conjunction with Azure to shore up the cloud gaming component that Microsoft will continue to expand into.

Huh, this seems like an anticlimax. I know Microsoft talked a lot about using cloud computing to subsidise the power of the Xbox one but did that ever actually happen? If so what games use it? Is that why some need to be constantly connected to the internet? If it’s in use it’s certainly never shouted about.
And as someone said last week: OnLive.
