EA Reveal New Details About Anthem And A New Trailer

EA have just revealed more about Anthem during their EA play show with three of the Bioware team on stage to talk about the game, General Manager Casey Hudson, Executive Producer Mark Darrah, and Lead Writer Catheleen Rootsaert.

“It’s what we called ‘our would your story’,” explains Casey, “This is a living shared world, where everyone is playing together but when you finish the mission you come back to the base, which is a single player area and this is where your story really lives and breathes.”

“One of the unique challenges of the world that is meant to be alive,” adds Catheleen. “It’s always changing, storms, seasons, it’s a really great concept to write for. It gives us an opportunity to drop in an event that changes the game play for everyone.”

“We’re also designing it so you can add story for years to come” she continues, “The premise of Anthem is that it is a world left behind, unfinished, by the gods. They also left behind the Anthem of Creation which creates violent storms, mutates creatures”.

The enemy are called The Dominion, and they have discovered a way to weaponise the Anthem. To beat them you will be suiting up in a Javelin, one of four different exoskeletons that protect you from the harsh environment. The Ranger is a general suit for up close and personal combat, the Colossus is heavier and has big weapons, and there is also the Interceptor and the Storm. You can can change gear and weapons on Javelin, and also customised the paint jobs and geometry of the suit. It sounds like more Javelins will be added post launch.

There will be paid for cosmetics and vanity items, but there will not be any no loot boxes or pay-for-power options. It will be running at 30FPS (unlocked on PC) but 4K is not confirmed, “We’ll see” say EA. There is no PvP mode and you can play the entire game by yourself, which should please those who get annoyed by Destiny’s locked off content. Mark Darrah also seemed to hint that a public beta will occur.

Anthem will launch on 22nd February 2019, which is the same day as Days Gone, on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

The story is happening in the homebase, and the co-op missions are story-free..? Ok, but I’m not convinced this makes me any more excited about this Destiny-Monster Hunter crossover. It looks pretty, but still shallow.

4K not confirmed? I find it hard to believe it won’t be. Nevertheless, this game has a lot of convincing to do.

Pretty much the only currently announced game that I’m actually hoped for. Of course, it could go horribly wrong, but I don’t think it will.

This looks like it could sink its teeth into me and not let go.

    Great stuff!

I’m still not sure what to make of it, reminds me a little of Destiny and like that game i would probably enjoy it for as long as the grind feels satisfying. Bioware have a better pedigree when it comes to the storytelling i feel, so that may make the difference. All that talk of an ever-expanding universe just made me yearn for Mass Effect 2 Infinity though. I’d have loved continuing episodes of ME2 – that was my “star trek away team” game!
