Something For The Weekend – 23/06/18

More football than you can shake a stick at.

Sure, there’s tons of football for fans to enjoy/whinge about, but round these parts we like to talk about F1, and this is the first of three back-to-back weekends of racing. The odd thing is that nobody seems to like Circuit Paul Ricard. The drivers have all given a collective shrug of the shoulders, there’s people complaining about the psychedelic runoffs, and we’ll just have to wait and see whether it delivers and interesting race.

If you’re not watching sports or heading outside to enjoy the unusually consistent good weather, then I hope you have some great gaming planned. Maybe you’re checking out The Crew 2’s open beta, or taking in the Killing Floor 2 free weekend?

In the News This Week

Games in Review

It was a strange week where all the games in for review were good, but not great, seemingly hitting that “average” 7/10 score almost across the board. Hopefully more games can excel next week, because it’d be a shame for what we’re all playing to descend to the actual average 5/10 or below…

Reviewed platform in bold.

This Week’s Features

With quite a few reviews to run, previews and other features took a back seat this week. Still, Jim delved into House Flipper for one of the strangest sim game concepts running, while Jason was careful to play his cards right in the intriguing card battler Insane Robots.

I played board games instead of video games, sharing my thoughts on the quirkily brilliant Crusader Kings The Board Gamebefore a Ade took us back to the time of the Ancient Greeks in Playing With History to look at the setting for the newly revealed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. He’s done well to not sound too smug about guessing the next time period so accurately.

Lastly, What We Played featured Jurassic World Evolution, Splatoon 2 and Mario Tennis Aces.

Your Achievements

Let’s check in with the community this week:

  • MrYD finished off the “utter nonsense” of Black Ops III, before returning to Star Trek Bridge Crew and being the fourth man in an entirely gay crew. The captain apparently spent as much time giving out orders as he was flicking through Grindr.
  • If JR. can be believed, then Captain America: Super Soldier for PS3 is nowhere near as pants as Iron Man 2 was.
  • Struggling with “a super hot house and fever ridden toddlers,” ron_mcphatty could only manage a few hours of GT Sport and Shadow of the Colossus.
  • It was Andrewww’s birthday this past week – Happy Birthday! – and after being disappointed with Tacoma, he treated himself to Horizon Zero Dawn. All those hours of Bloodborne have made the game feel terribly easy though.
  • There’s just one trophy left to mop up before Crazy_Del can nab the platinum in Vampyr.
  • Having tried The Crew 2’s beta, TSBonyman was unimpressed by the boats and planes, but did enjoy the cars. None of it really grabbed him, sadly. Instead he could be found chilling out in No Man’s Sky.
  • gernboes added the platinum trophies for Life Is Strange: Before The Storm and Stories – The Path of Destinies to his cabinet.
  • Jag went back to play Arkham Origins this last week, before returning to AC Origins’ Curse of the Pharaohs expansion, which was an easy  recommendation for him.
  • Finally, aerobes said PES 2018 is still brilliant, and spent most of his time in The Crew 2’s beta zooming in and out of the map.

The Paul Ricard circuit looks like it’ll be good for overtaking with slow corners leading to long straights but after the practice sessions it’s not looking to good. At least the weather may come to the rescue. As for the stripes, they’re a good idea for a test circuit to slow the cars down but I much prefer gravel traps where you pay for your mistakes.

It’s provided lots of fun in F2, but I can’t see F1 being as entertaining with it so hard to follow. Midfield battles could be fruity.

Such a weird game. Southgate was right in his assessment that they really didn’t play all that well.

Still, anything is possible with one of the world’s top 5 #9’s.
