PUBG On Xbox One X Is Getting An Actual Graphics Downgrade

Perceived graphical downgrades cause all sorts of fuss on the Internet so it will be interesting to see what the keyboard warriors do when the developers admit that a game is getting a graphical downgrade, albeit a temporary one.

PUBG Corp have posted a blog explaining that they are “aware of framerate issues on the Xbox One X, and that this is a top priority for us,” and that a hotfix will be deployed tomorrow, September 18th. However, it’s less of a fix and more of a rollback, here’s what’s going to be changed.

  • Shadow Quality (Both Dynamic/Static) lowered
  • Post Processing
    • Turn off Motion Blur
    • Decrease quality of Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO)
    • Turn off Depth of Field
    • Turn off Lens Flare
    • Decrease Eyes Adaption Quality
      • This is the time it takes for your eyes to adapt to the dark when you go from a bright to dark place.
  • Effects
    • Turn off Screen Space Reflection (SSR)
      • This is the reflection from windows and such.
    • Turn off Refraction
      • This is refracted light.
    • Turn off Subsurface Scattering (SSS)
      • This is when there is light inside an object to make it look more real.
    • Turn off Particle Light
      • This is dynamic light from different effects such as explosions.
    • Lower the number of particles created

“The resolution and textures will remain the same,” say PUBG Corp, “We wanted to maintain the quality in overall visuals, so to minimize the difference, we only reduced very specific detailed graphics options like shadowing and reflection.”

“We are also working on a long term solution for Xbox One X that we intend on implementing in the future that will cater to two different audiences: those who prefer better graphics and those who prefer better performance and don’t mind sacrificing some graphical quality,” they add. “We currently do not have many details to share, but will provide updates on this as soon as we’re able to.”

  1. They should have had some sort of beta or done an early access thing and dealt with those issues then.

    • Pretty sure it was early access.

    • Give them a break, they’ve only had a year ;-)

  2. This is most welcome. Hitman and Tomb Raider score points for offering better performance Vs better visuals and in a multiplayer game like PUBG the former takes priority.

I’ve been blown away by the visuals the X puts out but with PUBG it has always seemed like they just ported the PC code with high settings regardless of optimization.

Even on my Pro I favor performance mode in Monster Hunter as frame rate makes more of a difference to the overall enjoyment. My most played game this gen is Stardew Valley so shiny graphics are to be treated as a bonus not essential.
