UK Charts 15/06/18 – Spider-Man Casts A Shadow Over Tomb Raider

Spider-Man spent a second week at the top of the charts, despite the release of a couple of big budget contenders in the form of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and NBA 2K19. It continues Sony’s hot streak with exclusives, and looks set to continue to beat God of War’s performance earlier this year – it’s almost already overtaken Kratos in just two weeks!

Shadow of the Tomb Raider launched in Spidey’s, well, shadow. Sales were up over Rise of the Tomb Raider, but the 25% improvement isn’t so rosy when taking into account that this is a multi-platform release again. It’s still 70% shy of the 2013 reboot’s first week sales, but with the caveat that digital sales are taking an ever increasing slice of the pie.

Third was NBA 2K19, which debuted ahead of eternal favourites Crash Bandicoot, Mario Kart 8 and GTA V.

27 8 The Elder Scrolls Online
10 4 LEGO The Incredibles
15 10 Super Mario Odyssey

  1. Spidey will be there until Red Dead Redemption I think… (unsure of Assassins Creed and Fallout)
Still a brilliant game and I need to pick up Rise of the Tomb Raider soon!

  2. Really wasn’t expecting SM to be such a hit. I knew it would do well but this is something else. Seems to be a real buzz about it. Was there this much Buzz for the Beenox SM games?

Hopefully, this will lead to more AAA Marvel games. I think SM sequel is pretty much guaranteed at this point but I’d love an Iron-Man centric game too. Although, he probably wouldn’t stay confined to NYC. They’d probably need multiple hub worlds for it to really work. A Thor game set in Asgard could work though. Maybe someone should start a Marvel videogame Universe with cross-over characters and shared worlds!

TR will still do well I think but a few people I’ve spoken to have said it’s ‘more of the same’. That’s fine with me as far as gameplay and visuals are concerned but not so much in terms of story and character development. We’re entering The Hobbit movie territory at this point with the exteeeeeeeeended origin story. I’m half-expecting Lara to break out in a musical number in this one. Bit of plate-tossing in the jungle.

I personally can’t wait for a more mature Lara who goes on adventures because she loves exploring. Oh well, my copy of Shadow arrived on Friday, so you’ll all find out how I feel soon enough… when I write my 10,000 word essay for #Whatweplayed.

Need to 100% complete SM first though :D

    • Nah Beenox wasn’t exactly a hype game to be honest. This one is different as we all know its Insomniac (previous exclusive game was Sunset Overdrive) which looked good and did well. Knowing they are developing Spiderman and seeing the trailers it was an immediate Day One Purchase all aboard the hype train…. next stop success…. lol
I am still waiting on more news of Square Enix who are developing a Marvel Game!
Looking forward to your essay JR

  3. Spiderman is a much bigger name than Tomb Raider in general. The brand itself outshines Lara’s adventures, especially with the Marvel Universe being as popular as it is.

It really does come down to more wanting to play as Spiderman than those wanting to play with Lara.

  4. Spiderman has a better story and is the more polished experience but I enjoy playing Tomb Raider more.

  5. Spidey is a mega game and for me its the best of its type out there. It has everything in abundance. Incredible feat and well deserved of it first place spot.

Its great to see my friends list and see everyone playing it and staying with it, then the chats whenever we all catch up about the set pieces, abilities, attention to details and overall game quality, its an absolute banger!
