Recently purchased my first Android phone (Xperia Play, couldn't resist!) so I thought I'd start a thread for the best apps available on the market. These could be games (either free or otherwise) or general utility apps or whatever laugh

My currents faves: Game – Zombie Dash – Free and really fun to pick up and have a couple games.

App – Dropbox – Basically syncing files from my computer, not only backing them up but being able to    access them on the go is extremely handy.

What about yours? laugh

Ive lost quite a many lonely afternoons to Gem Miner. Pretty fun app, anybody should give it a look. Its free :)

A few other quality apps:

App – Dolphin Browser mini (Or Dolphin Browser HD, if you have a HD screen). – Great web browser :) – Both are free

App – 1-Click Clear. (Now renamed 1-Click Cleaner) – Very good utility for cleaning up your phone. Can clear messages, caches, web history and so on. – Free

App – Evernote – Great note-taking utility, allows you to take photo notes and lovely little features like that :P – Free

App – Zedge – Cool app which gives you access to the Zedge website and lets you get thousands of wallpapers and text tones. – Free

App – Sickipedia – Jokes, updated daily. Age rating 18+ :P – Free

App – AVG Free – Antivirus is really good to have on Android, as there can be malicious apps in the Market (just don't download dodgy looking ones and you should be fine). – Free

Launcher – ICS Launcher – A launcher that re-skins your phone to look like OS 4, Ice Cream Sandwich. (Not sure if the Xperia Play has it but I'm sure its getting it). Really nice launcher, anyway would recommend it to anyone with an Android that doesn't already have ICS. – Free

Keyboard – Ice Cream Sandwich Keyboard – Goes well with the launcher above, but its a good keyboard anyway. The creator is johntanmi in case you can't find the one I'm on about ;) – Free

Game – Angry Birds (Rio, Seasons) – Look, in all honesty, I don't like Angry Birds but there free and you might as well see what all the fuss is about – All are free

Game – Paper Toss – Good fun little game, great for killing time :) – Free

Well thats all I can think of now. If I get/ think of any more I'll come back and post again. Tried to keep them all free, free is always good :) hope you try and enjoy some of them, that post took me 20 minutes to write up on my tablet tongue

All 2011 Xperias (So the PLAY) will be getting ICS around Spring, however all Xperia's already have features from ICS (E.g. screen-shots & panoramic photo's).

I got a free music downloader called mp3 music download. Its a free app and has millions of tunes to download, all free. Pretty happy with it.

Tower raiders – if you like tower defence, which I do, its great :-)

3d bowling is pretty good to kill a few minutes at a time on a bus/train.

Abduction & ninjump – 2 different games, both very simple, both quite addictive.

Agree with game dev story, utterly addictive.

Also, get a sleeptalk recorder, switch it on when you go to bed. It activates if you say anything in your sleep and records it, hours of endless fun. I used it to prove to my Mrs she does indeed snore sometimes but we've also managed to pick up inane ramblings at 3am!

Thanks for the  tTorrent shout. Was looking for something like this but for some reason couldn't find it in the market.

My picks:

-Dice Player (manages to play 720p mkv files without stuttering)

-Digitally Imported Radio

-Defender

-Drinkspiration by ABSOLUT (I love Absolut Vodka…)

-Emit (stream media from a PC to your Android device)

-FPse, Snesoid, etc.

-Splashtop Remote Desktop HD

-sixaxis controller (root required)

-SwiftKey Tablet X (I'll never use another keyboard for my tablet again. The split keyboard is perfect and the Tron theme is a dream come true)

-They need to be fed (unfortunately no new content and replay value is pretty slim but it's still a cool game)

Loads of stuff to check out, cheers guys!

Would you also recommend rooting it as well then? I was looking at a proxy app, but that only works with rooted phones. I don't really have any clue how to go about that or whether it's safe or not.

I did have mine rooted using Z4root, which allowed you to un-root if you weren't happy but I don't think Z4root works on newer firmwares, so no luck there I suppose :/

I didn't use my root for much, but there are some pretty cool apps that require root access, SetCPU for example, is a premium app which allows you to set the speed of your CPU as high or as low as it can go and anywhere in between. Setting it to high is fairly risky though. Can overheat and even brick your phone.

tl;dr: look into it thoroughly before rooting, make sure you will use it and find something that easily and definitely roots your device ;)

On a side note, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. I need more Android apps :P I call for a sticky! Although that may be more apt if this thread were in General Chat tongue

Awesome, this is perfect for me. I just got the Asus Transformer tablet as my 1st Android experience. Been a really good read.
I would also recommend Ted Air for anyone who enjoys watching informative lectures on a very wide range of subjects.

I tried the demo yesterday and purchased the HD version afterwards.

Great graphics, great physics and great ambient electronica BGM.
