Ok, there could be a really obvious answer to this question but I've asked anyway.
I have a hugh backlog of games and I want to try and play some new ones whilst catching up with the old. I have FFXIII and FFXIII-2, but after watching some of the great trailers of FFXIII-2 – and hearing about FFXIII being rather linear – I'd ideally like to start FFXIII-2, even though I've not yet played FFXIII. Is this going to cause me to be confused with the story (which can often happen in an FF game anyway), or should I play FFXIII and just rush through the story ignoring side quests, to set me up for FFXIII-2? Or are they similar enough that FFXIII will be just as enjoyable as starting FFXIII-2? Does anything carry forward to FFXIII-2 from your FFXIII save file?
If you could give me some advice, and/or the benefits of playing FFXIII first (if there are any), without giving away any spoilers, I'd be grateful. Thanks

I played 10-2 without ever having played 10 and was fine so you might be ok. I'd still play 13 first though, I really enjoyed it.

Thanks – there's that childish part of me that wants to play FFXIII-2 as its new, and I never play anything on release as I'm always behind with my games!! Also I'm hopefull that they'll have fixed anything wrong with FFXIII for this sequel. However I don't want to do it at the expense of missing out, even if I decide to go back to FFXIII at a later date. As with most sequels, I guess they have to make them accessable to "new" people otherwise it can limit sales, so I should be ok.

I would say yes mainly because it's set a few years after the events of 13. Although, i've heard that 13-2 has a quick summary of 13, it's just better to play through 13 so you have an idea of the 13 universe and be surprised at the improvements. Also, it will help you to know who's who as i think the cast of 13 do return in 13-2.You can't import a save as FF13-2 is a sequel and features a new playable main character.
There are barely any side quests in 13 so you may as well focus on getting the story done. But beware, it's linear as hell for the first half(i think as i'm at chapter 10/11 atm and not sure if it's the halfway point) and you can pretty much get away without grinding. I've done very little grinding and have managed to defeat many bosses within one go.
If you can put up with the linear style of 13 then i would reccomend playing it as it's still a good game. :)
@tony, You poor man, noone should be exposed to that abomination of a game.

I got around 5-7 hours into 13 and stopped. Still haven't found the time to go back to it (and thats including the ltd edition hardback guide) so when it cam to FF13-2, I just bought the ltd edition guide and am waiting for the game to drop in price. I've already seen it at the £28 quid mark, not long now until it drops to £20.
But when I do buy it, i'm faced with the same predicament. Not sure what i'm gonna do yet, seeing as i own 13, and an easy to follow, basically fool proof guide, I should really finish 13 first. if i start 13-2, then I may stop playing that for a while, and end up in a worse situation.
Also, since 7, this is the first time I have not bought a FF game day 1.

To be honest I would strongly recommend you play XIII first. Personally I would say XIII is the better game. It may be linear but that way the story is able to really shine through, which is something I'm kind of missing with XIII-2.
You also get a lot more CGI cut scenes, which is the cherry on top of the Sundae of awesomeness that is the Final Fantasy franchise. They toned down on those for XIII-2 to not piss off Microsoft.

I'm more confused than a GSCE student at a college open day.
Whilst it looks like I could probably play FFXIII-2 first, perhaps I'll run through FFXIII, especially if its linear. Both will seem like a new game to me anyway, plus it'll be another game from my backlog done, and it may be harder to make the step backwards (due to improvements) later on.

Oh – and as always thank you, its always great to ask you guys/gals!
I think I'll start FFXIII first. As Kerash mentions, I do like a good FF cutscene!
And since I'm going to start it, does anyone know what you have to do to earn the downloadable FF Themes from in-game?

I've just told the resident FF nut about this thread on twitter. Some say that he has played every FF game and even sunk 80 hours into 10-2 and that he uses Kupo at the end of his sentences, all we know he's called Roy.
It is a good idea to do 13 first to avoid 13-2 spoiling it for you. Oh and you will be surprised at the Chocobo song.

Glad you chose to play XIII first.
Hope Theme: Beat the game
Snow Theme: Get a 5 star rating for all Cie'th Stone missions. (Need almost maxed out characters for last fight. Not going to happen if you just want to breeze through the game)
Fang Theme: Owned every weapon and accessory in the game at least once. This was my last trophy and this will require major farming for rare items because you have to get one of the ultimate weapons for every character.
Sazh Theme: Fully scanned 100 enemies. You will probably unlock this by playing through the game without even paying attention to it.
Vanille Theme: Complete chapter 11.
Serah Theme: Unlocked with the platinum trophy. :P

I knew there was no way in hell I was going to do the majority of what's needed to get the themes so I just downloaded them
I like to switch now and then but currently I have Serah's theme active

Thanks for the Theme list….some are obviously obtainable without too much struggle. Can you buy them from the Store then Mikey?

I think he was referring to Roynaldo. ;)
I usually just use the standard theme because I never like the icons for custom themes. Somehow they newer manage to match them to the general vibe you get from the wallpaper.

Oh yes, Roynaldo!
Do you know which sites are good/reliable Mikey? I've also love to get the Uncharted 2 theme that came with the Special Edition, as my code never worked

I use http://www.ps3-themes.com
There are mostly ones created by users but there are some offical ones that slip through the net. I checked for uncharted, theres a few but mostly user created.
There is a lot of shite on the site (hey! that rhymes), but also some very very well made themes.

There is no actual /need/ to play XIII before XIII-2 as there is a full round up in the start menu, chapter by chapter with video and voiceover. However it is certainly worthwhile playing anyway and you would be a fool not to for the measly amount of money it costs now.
By the time you have done XIII maybe XIII-2 will be pretty cheap too.
Win and win!

I am about 6 hours in to XIII, does it get any better than walk in a straight line and keep pressing autobattle during all the fights? I am struggling to care about this game enough to keep playing, it's a massive shame because I easily pumped over 100 hours into all the older FF games.
