Ok, so, having recently gotten back into playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on the PS3, I've gotten to love the game all over again. The guns feel perfect, each one feels noticeably different, and the map design is just sublime. For all it's beautiful graphics, I just don't think that Battlefield 3 matches up to it, it's not as fun to play. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE both games, but I just prefer Bad Company 2 to Battlefield 3. I think the latter has lost something from the former (yes, I know Bad Company is a spin off from the 'proper' BF series, but that's my opinion on the console versions at least).

Another game series I think like this is Civilisation. I prefer IV to V. Why? The game worlds just feel bigger and more attention paid to the game design, there's more faction's and Civ 4 just feels superior to Civ 5. Again, both are great games, I just prefer the game which came before the latest version.

It's not nostalgia coming into play as I still enjoy the latest games and in both cases, the two games I love were not my entry point into the franchises, I just think that both games are better than their sequels.

So, anyone else feel like this? Anyone prefer the older games in as series to the latest releases? smile

With the Call Of Duty series I much prefer the older games to the newer ones. Modern Warfare 1 and COD 3 were my fav's of the series, the later games I loath.

Apart from that there is balance for me. For exmaple I prefer KZ2 to KZ3 but I prefer Resistance 3 to the earlier ones. I dont just like sequels or originals, there is a balance between the two.

In the Assassins Creed series, AC2 is still my favourite. The more recent ones just don't compare to the older ones.

It's hard to say with regards to COD because they are all so similar to each other. I love the old ones because they were WW2, but I love the Modern Warfare series because of the storyline, the characters and the way online plays.

If we take the recent SSX reboot, then I much prefer the old ones. Playing the demo today just put me off the game – it's lost what the old ones had and just doesn't feel fun to play.

The most glaringly obvious title that springs to mind is GTA Vice City…..yet to be equalled and doubtful that it ever will be. To be honest though all of the earlier series GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas had it wink

That said though, I have massive hopes and aspirations for GTA V, which I am seriously looking forward to!

I liked the first 3 console CODs but found MW4 onwards to be boring.

My favorite GTA game is San Andreas as that was fun as hell. And i prefer the GTA3 trilogy to GTA4 as they had variety. I know it's not fair to compare 3 games to a single game but there's not that many GTA games out atm.

I'm the same as Gazzagb when it comes to AC. AC2, that had a lot of new stuff and an amazing story. I don't like the new style of gameplay that AC:B brought to the series as it feels a bit weird and is too easy to accidentally kill a civilain.

MGS3  is my favorite MG game has it has the ratio of cutscenes to gameplay down perfectly. I'm not saying that i hate MGS4, i bloody love it but it was a bit over the top with it's cutscenes. Oh and Eva in MGS3, nuff said.kiss :p

I've pretty much given up on the POP series as imo, it should have ended after The Two Thrones.

I prefer the older FF games as they are excellent and still are today. The recent FFs feel a bit half arsed at times and in the case of 13, barely resembles a FF game. Oh and 10-2 can die, then use a phonix down, die again, etc..

Forgotten Sands was truly a terrible game and a disgrace towards the trilogy… the new PoP would've been better. Then Dbz used to produce great games on the PS2 and Wii (Tenkaichi) but the qualitiy as declined drastically. I've just found Seventh gen games to be much worst than the previous last gen. Sometimes they would take a step back.

Newer Final Fantasies doesn't interest much, Sonic Adventure 2 was a great Dreamcast game but then its gotten worst for the next games.

I liked Forgotten sands, much better than the 2008 PoP IMO. FS went back to the original trilogy which still is fantastic.

On the whole, while sequels are often great games, they tend to lack the impact the original has made. Unless the game is a drastic improvement over the original (ie. AC2), it will often seem like the original was better as it was more novel.

MW4??? When did that get released??tongue

That aside though, i agree with Forgotten sands being better than the 2008 PoP, but it was a touch on the easy side & there wasn't much variety in enemies. They went back in the right direction with it at least though.

I both agree & disagree with yogdog on BC2 vs BF3 as whilst i did love BC2's online, i found myself growing a little tired of it once i was done with the trophies. Although i did pick it up sometime after its release, so the slightly diminished community & lack of friends playing probably didn't help that. BF3 for me does have its faults in the fact that some of the guns are very similar & rush (the mode i used to love in BC2) isn't as enjoyable for some reason. The only thing i can blame for that are the maps though, as i can't see too many differences other than that. But the difference for me is that i still have the urge to play BF3 & Conquest mode is still awesome. BC2 is definitely more rounded though.

Usually the things that suffer the worst from 'the sequel effect' are movies – It's rare to find a sequel that betters the original, but some do exist. Usually (& note i am not applying this across the broad spectrum) sequels to games can be very successful due to the fact that all they need to do is add to the formula of its predecessor, yet in some situations this can actually dilute the final product.

GTA IV was a good example of this (but it in fact started with San Andreas) – The game was still great, but there was far, far, far too much reliance on social interactions for my liking. Seriously, i want to be able to walk down a street to steal a car (seeing as it is Grand Theft Auto  & all!) without being hassled by my 'friends' to go out & play pool, or darts, or bowl, or whatever other menial task they would like to do. Also, if i say no, don't get annoyed & lose respect for me, some people are busy sometimes – My real life friends understand this, so why does Brucie fly into a rage if i don't spend at least 7 hours a week with him? Yes, it is probably the steriods for him, but that doesn't explain Jacob or any of the others reacting in the same way.

I am looking forward to GTA V, but the hints towards gyms & more social interaction crap is putting me off slightly.

Please, please, please make it more akin to Vice City & i'll be all over it.hodgi

…I don't know PoP 08 was a nice game but what they did with the combat, bosses and platforming wasn't right, just too simple but it was just charming to play I guess.  Forgotten Sands is the worst simply because of the combat and movement I didn't like it much towards the orignal trilogy. imo
