So, yesterday I created a topic for games that you thought were Underrated (http://www.thesixthaxis.com/fo…..ted-games/) and I had a fair few replies to that, so, here's the topic's sibling: Overrated games.

Which games do you feel did too well and didn't deserve the sales or praise that was heaped upon them? Don't be afraid to say a game which is really popular, after all, it's all down to opinion! Remember all, play nice smile

First, I'll list a few game franchises rather than specific games, and get them out of the way: Call of Duty is definitely, at least with recent outing's, in my opinion overrated, it's not the best thing since sliced bread to me. CoD, CoD 2 and CoD 4 (and to a lesser extent, Zombie mode of WaW and Blop's) were all brilliant though, on both SP and MP, I'm not tarnishing the entire series with the same brush. Next up is Mario, I hate the bastard and the carbon copy games they churn out every year! About the only game I did enjoy is Mario Kart Wii, which let's face it, who doesn't enjoy Mario Kart? If I could drive a Main Battle Tank over Mario though, I really would laugh Finally, Final Fantasy, I just don't enjoy the genre of JRPG's though (Blue Dragon was the exception to the rule) so that's probably why I don't think they deserve the praise they get.

Starcraft 2 is in my opinion, verrrryyyy overrated on the PC. Sure, it's a good game, I don't deny that, I just think there are games that have done the strategy genre better than it has in the past which you can get very cheap now (World in Conflict, Age of Empires, Dawn of War etc) and it doesn't deserve the insane amount of praise and awards heaped upon it. For now, I've said enough. So, Guy's n Gal's, which games do you think are overrated? smile

After loving the first 2 games, I have to admit I couldn't get into Uncharted 3 at all. It was just one action scene after another in a line of set-pieces. Bought it on release day and traded it in a few days later. Maybe I will buy it back when it eventually drops below 15-20 quid. I so wanted to love this game too

Controversial maybe but for me RDR. It looks stunning and is fairly good fun, but I just can't play it for long periods of time. The missions seem dull, the shooting is pretty rediculous (hitting people with a shotgun from the 19th century from 60 feet) and moving about is too slow. Too expansive an area with not much inbetween.

hmmm, this is a hard one….. but typically ive got a few ;)

Far Cry 2: Are you kidding me Ubi? you exchange the prettiest environment ive ever seen and some wonderfully chunky guns for some dust, alot of brown, malaria and the stupidest story of all time? someone should have been shot for this.

F1 2010: Bugged, Bugged and more Bugged with the most wooden acting in the universe, every time my "agent" spoke to me i felt like hard resetting and driving physics that made me feel like i was steering a cabin cruiser at sea no matter what settings i tried its sequel is only saved from my list because of the livelier handling.

FFVII: Is he trolling? i hear you cry…..No, no im not, i missed out on this game back in the day thanks to my Quake 2 clan and CS 1.6, it wasnt until 2000 that i played a FF (8) which i completed and enjoyed. At the tail end of 2000 i was given a copy of 7 by my friends with the prefix "Best game ever"".

Really?.

Better than System Shock 2? better than Quake? better than Deus Ex? Really?

NO

awful character animations, a story that made me go Meh, a Materia system that felt lazy in name and lazy in nature, combat that was a bore even by HoMM3 standards and character development straight out of budget £6 books about Atlantis or the Templars.

Bad game? No, Best? nowhere god damned near.

This is a bit of a tricky one for me as I don’t usually  purchase games that get a high rating, simply for the fact that they got a high rating – I have to have a high level of interest to begin with in order for something to take my fancy with an additional decent score. That said though, I have found that I have been duped into the odd duff purchase & here they are;

LA Noire – Hyped as the best thing since poptarts & turned out to be a dull repetitive chore. Still haven’t finished it to this day. The tech was fantastic though – if they could pop hat into a worthy game, I’d buy it like a shot.

Deus Ex – I still kinda like the idea of this game, but playing it is something quite, quite different. Again, another one I haven’t felt the urge to finish & not sure I will if I am honest. I think the thing that puts me off (as sad as this sounds) are mainly the trophies though – If you are going to give me the freedom to take on tasks/missions as I wish, don’t put in silly trophies that mean I can’t fart near a guard.

GTA IV – Don’t get me wrong, as I did actually really enjoy GTA IV, but I still believe it was overrated. Ever since San Andreas, GTA had been getting a bit too ‘micro managey’ (SA had the weights & the dating, which I found to be nothing more than chores) & GTA IV continued this with the novel idea of having to take your friends out on dates every 5 bleeding seconds (or so it seemed) just to ensure that they would still pick you up/sell you guns whatever. I am not sure if they were trying to emulate real life in some way, but I know for a fact that if my friend rings up & asks if I wanna do something, he doesn’t get pissy & lose respect for me if I say no!

Mortal Kombat vs DC – Ok, maybe not critically acclaimed material here, but I found that this game just sucked a bit too hard for even the scores it got. I got suckered in by the first MK of this gen ("& it has DC too!"), but it ended up just being a bit drab with really watered down or just plain weird fatalities. Don’t get me started on the challenges that made up most of the trophy list either! Sheesh.

Need For Speed Shift – Dull. No more can be said about this really for me. Probably doesn’t help that I am not a fan of the sim racer in fairness, but I hoped it would be a bit of a balance of arcade & sim type racing like Dirt 2 (kinda) was, but it wasn’t. it was just an arcade racer trying to be a sim & failing (as far as I am concerned anyway).

Tekken 6 – Again, not exactly critically acclaimed, but thought it was worth a mention as wtf was up with that campaign mode?? Ruined a perfectly good one on one fighter with a gimmick, when all they needed to do was re-release Tekken 5 with shinier graphics & Tekken bowl!!

I get what you mean with Deus Ex. I was excited at first about a good stealth game and I thought I could be clever and grab all the trophies in one playthrough, but progress through the game is so slow and you have to re-start as soon as you walk off a ledge and a guard hears you land from about 50 metres away. My girlfriend got it me for Christmas and I haven't got the heart to tell her that I can't be bothered playing it!

Modern Warfare 2, COD: Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3.

COD4:MW was the pinnacle of the COD series for me, even though I really enjoyed World at War.

Since then, the series has become repetitive and stale. I know the sales say otherwise, but COD really needs a freshen up, new engine and possibly new direction.

Can't comment on Skyrim as it really isn't my sort of game so i have never played it, but i found Borderlands to be a great game – If anything it's a bit like Rage (or Rage is like that more accurately!), but with a little more personality. Not knocking your opinion of course, but i actually find a lot of similarities between Rage & Borderlands, so it quite surprises me you didn't like it tbh.

Mind you, you did run after writing this, so you are probably miles away by now!tongue

I enjoyed Borderlands, completed it once on Xbox, twice on PS3 smile

Agreed with Red Dead Redemption and FFVII, they've been really overhyped and far from the best game ever made in the case of the latter.

But Skyrim, Deus Ex and Far Cry 2 (I thought the final one was decent, even after playing the others): WHAAAAATTTTT?!?!! tongue

Well I was attracted to Borderlands due to the art style, but just found the environments totally bland (I know, weird when you consider I like Fallout 3 and Rage). The vehicle controls were no less than terrible. The guns were boring and whilst the game boasts millions of combinations of weapons (or something) the guns all looked pretty similar, it was just a case of comparring the stats every few kills and getting something basically the same, but a couple of points better in a certain area. It doesn't have the fluid FPS combat of Rage, or even a VATS style system to compensate, it's somewhere horribly inbetween. Similar to Rage the environments were also pretty limited and there isn't actually much free roam, or at least any point to it. I just found it dull, even when playing co-op. Oh, and the story seemed pretty non-existant.

I really wanted to like it, espeically as the GOTY edition with all the DLC only cost me £12.99 new, but I'm still not fussed about going back to it.

No doubt loads of people loved it, I just didn't click with it.

Dead Island is a pile of shit for me. Deus Ex is no where as good as people make it out to be. Every single Call Of Duty after 4. NFS Hot Pursuit I hate it. Gran Turismo 5 no need to explain.

Short & sweet mate. I like!hodgi

Although i have to disagree with a couple… But we all have our own opinions of what to expect from a game & it would be damn boring if we all had the same views (plus this & the other thread would either be the shortest threads in history, or just pages & pages of "agree!")laugh

I can see why some people don't like Dead Island. For some reason though, about 2/3 of the way through, I really started to enjoy it and get that "just one more mission" feeling. Almost surprised I stayed with it long enough for that to happen, but glad I did. The infected are pretty annoying since the patch though, and it's defo best played co-op, if you can get passed the connection problems. Perhaps I should do the same with Borderlands.

I could spend a lot of time in here but I'll just put what's at the very top of my list. Both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.

Ah, i see – Yeah, if i had played the first that would probably twizzle my sticks too (i hear it was good), but unfortunately i didn't, so my brain just tells me it was simply Deus Ex.

If i was a mod mate, i would change 'em (mine at least) - But i'm not. Sorry!

On that note though, did you play Deus Ex HR (see, there you go!)? What did you think of it if so?
