Hey all,
I bet when you read the title of this you thought it was going to be spam, well its not, I am looking for some advice.
What the hell is freeware? My mate was just telling me how he can get old games for his PC for free, like Champ Manager 99/00 and the original GTA. I have never really been a PC gamer but I was about 10 years ago when this was out and I didn't own a console.
So can someone please tell me what he is on about? Bear with me too because the only thing I use my PC for is Facebook and TSA, plus a few other specialist websites . He swears it is all above board, I have looked on wikipedia but I am still a little bit in the dark about how it all works.
I know how helpful TSAian's are so i thought I would ask you guys
Also, please don't post anything that may incriminate yourself or, worse than that, incrimate TSA. If its not legal then dont post it.
Cheers
Brendan

I am not entirely sure myself but I believe Freeware is games that are given away for free. Usually old games I think.
I have the original GTA which I downloaded legally from Rockstar about a year ago. http://www.rockstargames.com/c…..sics/?id=3
You can also get Command and Conquer and I believe Sim City as well. I am sure there are plenty of others but I havent looked into it too much.

Freeware is basically just software that is available for free legally. This could be anykind of software. For example Linux is freeware, Firefox is freeware, etc, etc…

yup, freeware is simply software from the original source which is free. The examples that you gave, like Champ Man 99/00 and GTA 1 and 2, along with things like the original C&C and Red Alert have all been released as a free download by the rights holders. So yes, they're above board.
Just be sure that you're getting it from the rights holder and not some shady back corner of the interweb.

When I click it an explantion mark appears right next to my mouse.
EDIT: I just realised that my laptop was classing the link as a pop-up. I held control whilst I clicked the link and it all worked fine.

the link works perfectly here too. You're not using *shudder* Internet Explorer, are you?
You can get to the same page by typing "GTA Free" into Google. It'll be the top link.

Freeware are usually quite old, yeah?
I ask because my laptop has a weird Dell graphics card that can't even do 3D and wanted to know if freeware will work ok?

that depends on the game really.
Though most of the classics you can get for free, like GTA2 and C&C:RA are sprite based, so you should be golden.

Freeware is also software Utilities that are written by independant coders (best usually Eastern European) that happily release their software for free, probably to get noticed and get scouted. There is some really good freeware available but also some not so good.

I have downloaded GTA 2, Manhunt, C&C Red Alert 2 and The Sims 1 all free, old games are easy for people to just upload.
All you need to do is search on youtube. Say you want The Sims, search 'How to download The Sims 1 for free' and you will get a few videos, check ratings and comments and if they genuinely feel safe and also see which one is the most simple (for The Sims and Manhunt and RA2 I just downloaded and searched for the application file and they loaded up, no install needed').
It is great downloading old games you can't be arsed to buy again as they are easy to get hold of without having to spend a money or really worry about viruses unless you are a complete PC noob. ;)

By the way, this not an example of freeware. But you can also find freeware on youtube, if you search 'Top Ten Free PC Games' or something (that is how I found the link for GTA2 which was from Rockstar).
