This morning at just-gone midnight (GMT), Sony representatives put on a live “conference” to show off their soon-to-be new and shiny PlayStation Move (PSM). Originally, I had heard nothing of this, and so I took a gamble on staying up until 1:00am watching the streamed video. Needless to say, I was not disappointed.

In anticipation to watching the conference, I reminisced about how gaming technology (and technology in general) is so wonderfully innovative. We’ve had Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Cartridge Games, Nintendo 64, PS1, PS2, PS3 – I jumped the timeline there but the point still stands tall. I thought that I was really lucky to be a failry-young person growing up in such an innovative society, but then I realised that everything is always progressing at any given time. Take Space Invaders, for example – when it first came out it was mind-numbingly awesome (my father said), and that is the same for every other new gaming console, we are constantly shocked by the progression of technology.

The show was, in a way, scattered: the format was that of a guy in the centre talking about the “invention”, and then game-play was performed at each end of the stage (two consoles) as to probably save time loading a new game up on one of them. The first game I actually saw (I wasn’t really paying attention at first) was a more family-orientated game. It involved lots of mini-games, but it seemed to be a lot like Wii Play – a “demo” game released to show the Wiis capability when the Wii was first on the market. Most of what I saw was like Wii Play, and the controller is, obviously, like the Wii controller. A fighting game was arisen: Wii Boxing? Admittedly, yes, it looked a hell of a lot better than the Wii, but I had to see game-play to decide whether it was A) stolen, and/or B) better.

Upon seeing the gameplay, I was astounded. The motion detector sensed the Demo Guy’s every movement. It was like they had stolen Wii technology, and then pwned it by giving it a make-over, and improving it. So in answer to my aforementioned letters, it was both A and B. I disliked the fact that the PS3 had stolen a concept, but I liked the fact that they had made it a lot better. The conference then pushed itself into a more action-based discussion, which left any viewer as surprised as they were at first.

Apparently, according to what was said, Socom 4 will be released in the Summer as a PSM game. This left a question; How were you able to move and control your player with two stick-shaped motion-sensored wireless controllers? An answer was given: by stealing off of the Wii. It annoyed me when the guy reached for an object and pulled out the so-called “PlayStation Move Sub-Controller.” I mean, really? Sony should have called it the “nunchuck” controller to be more original… however, I digress, the actual game-play, whether it was stolen or not, mixed with modern-day PS3 graphics (that apparently still need work!) combined to make Socom look like it’s going to be a highly-anticipated game. Everything was just perfect, and that is how, if stealing the Wii concept is "justifiable", PSM games should stay in order to "justify" their actions.
