Corvette ZR1 Chosen For GT PSP Cover

You know, we love Kazunori Yamauchi, and we think that Gran Turismo PSP will blow all other portable racing games out of the water when it launches on October 1st. There’s no question that the dedication over at Polyphony is unmatched in the racing world, and although we’ll also have Forza 3 the day after there’s already at least two PSPgos on pre-order at TSA Towers in anticipation of this new racing simulator.

Gran Turismo games have always been about the cutting edge of motorsports, with the latest vehicles taking centre spot on the front covers of the boxes, and although GT PSP will be a trophy child for the go’s download-only delivery method, the US Blog has posted details on the featured four wheeled monster that will grace the boxart of the traditional retail version of the game – the Corvette ZR1.

The 11 second quarter miler is GM’s most powerful production car ever, with a massive 6.2 litre V8 capable of 638 bhp and a zero to sixty time of 3.3 seconds.  It’s also astonishingly ugly, in my opinion.  That hasn’t put off Yamauchi, though.  “Many GM cars representative from the Autorama days have really helped build the foundations of my adoration and sense of value for cars. And something that had always been deep within my heart over the years is the long line of Corvettes,” he said.

“As long as I’ve known in every era, even from when I was a very small child, the Corvette has always been one of the coolest cars around. And that is the reason why the newest Corvette, ZR-1, was selected for the package cover of Gran Turismo for the PSP. Also, there’s a fun little bit at the ending of this PSP version of Gran Turismo that is in concert with this package image of the Corvette.”

I don’t want to sound cynical after such a lovely week in the sticks, but something suggests to be that GT PSP might play host to some kind of new and exclusive Corvette concept model, going off the quote above.  He mentions the packshot, but I don’t really see what he’s getting at there unless there’s a Corvette only night mode or something – maybe, of course the first person to ‘finish’ GT PSP wins a ZR1 for real – that would really ensure a tidy week one sales boost, eh?
