Sony: PS4 Won’t Be Released First

If you’re holding out for the PlayStation 4 to be released any time soon you’d better think again. Sony Worldwide Studios boss, Shuhei Yoshida, has said in an interview with Develop that Microsoft and Nintendo will release their next consoles before Sony.

“Looking from the outside, it was Microsoft that released the first of this generation of consoles. Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move.”

“Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move.”

“Probably the watch should be on these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”

Many have suggested that’s Sony’s early struggles this generation were partly down to Microsoft getting the jump on them. Sony clearly seem pretty happy with the PS3 having a long life cycle despite its slow start. If Microsoft’s European executive Chris Lewis is to be believed, Kinect will extend the Xbox 360’s life by 5 years which would mean the PS4 might not be seen for quite some time (or maybe Sony don’t believe the Xbox 360 can last 5 years). Capcom, however, recently suggested we would see the PS4 in the next 2-3 years.

Who knows when the PS4 will be released, but with Sony focused on 3D and Move for the PS3 it certainly won’t be soon.

  1. Take your time Sony.

PS1, 2 and 3 Have all been and still are awesome.

So the mind boggles at how good the PS4 will be…….

    • Exactly, don’t be tempted to play the ‘Generation Game’ with Microsoft again. The PS3 came out before it needed too, and it would be far better to bide your time and get the PS4 perfect and reasonably priced. Call it a 9th generation console and show up Microsoft and their crappy 8th generation model lol

      • Also what could MS add to a new Xbox (other than Halo 4) that would make it sell over and above the PS3? Sony could time a big PS3 price cut to coninside with the launch and a lot of people may just go for the cheaper PS3 and wait for the PS4.

3D? Blu-ray? HDD as standard? Motion gaming? The PS3 already does it, and the Wii proves graphics alone don’t sell consoles anymore.

You never know, without a PS4 multiplat devs would be forced to develop for Xbox 3 and PS3, which could bring up the quality of PS3 (for example both would likely have high-capacity media, assuming they don’t go the cloud route) and pull down the quality of the new Xbox, as the PS3 will become the lowest common denominator.

How long do MS wait before switching off LIVE support on their old consoles? If it’s not too long after the new Xbox is released Sony could time the release of the PS4 for the day the 360 servers go dark – that would be a great bit of PR…

      • exactly all they need to do is wait till its ready. imo they made the right choice with the release of the ps3 if they waited any longer than the 360 would of had an even bigger chunk of the market besides the only people who suffered as a result of the ‘Generation Game’ was 360 gamers, yes they got more dev support but they also got a low tech flaw’d console that was debilitating to the game industry e.g.DVD.
and as for the ps4 i dont see it coming for a while as the ps3 is only just starting to make significant improvements and just like the ps2 the full potential of the ps3 isn’t going to be realised until the end of its run

      • Again with the fanboy BS. Why does the MS model have to be “crappy”? Why can’t we all just get along?

      • because if microsoft release their console before the ps4, it is going to be crappy.
xbox 360 released before the ps3 and some models didnt even have HDMI….now their stuck with 1.2 instead of 1.3 so theres no chance of them doing 3d, no dolby true surround sound and they were big headed about HD-DVD which failed.
who ever releases their console first is likely to be the crappy one and its bound to be M$ considering they hardly have any good games coming up, halo will get worse without bungie, 3rd parties are starting to use ps3 as lead platform and portal 2 is coming to ps3…..maybe mass effect and left4dead also??

      • @Juelz345
because the console was released without HDMI. optical out. hard drive. WIFI.
however what it did come with was a archaic disk format. controller’s complete with batteries. and an insulting high failure rate

      • MS could get Kinect in built into the next xbox and have it operate like their concept trailer suggested. That would blow everything else out of the water and Sony would have to react quickly or they would be dead in the ater.

Also just because a console come out first doesn’t make it worse. The PS2 came out before the xbox and look how good that turned out to be.

  2. I think this is common sense really. It makes sense for Microsoft and Sony. Microsoft get the early gains, but in the long run, Sony normally produce a system thats better quality, and in the long run catches up. No point Sony bringing anything out soon, it’s only now that they are starting to make money and bring the real quality out of the PS3.

    • yea i agree. whats the point in starting a new console when we are just getting into this one?!? I think people will be a bit more careful jumping into a XBOX3 this time around. Apart from XBOX fanboys, most will agree that the PS3 is better and want/have one. Lots of people have a 360 then got a PS3, not many went with PS3 then got a 360 after.

      • I know someone who went PS3, 360, PS3.

      • yeah I know alot of people who actually bought a PS3 recently and don’t use the xbox anymore, even for multiplatform games such as COD etc. When you think of cost and quality etc, it makes alot of sense I think.

      • What a mad statement! How do you know this? Where is the source of your information? What utter crazyness!

      • ^^^ Microsoft fanboy alert.

      • Actually, I started with a PS3 and then picked up a 360.

Then I realised what a terrible thing I had done and promptly sold the 360 whilst kneeling before my PS3 praying to Kevin Butler for forgiveness.

      • They know people, and i have lots of friends who have done the same thing?!?! We don’t really need to quote sources, we are talking about our lives, thus no one will know the source…

Its really daft people defending consoles like they are there children. Console is a console, some are better than others. o_O

      • lol Tonycrawley. you crazy man you !

    • The console itself does seem better in my opinion but the PSN is a joke compared to XBL

  3. I keep reading PS4 as Persona 4. But seriously though, Kinect extending the 360’s lifetime by 5 years? Bullfuckin’shit. It’s a novelty product, it’ll last a year or less and it’ll go the way of the Wii probably, releasing endless party games that won’t be bought by anyone and when they do get bought it’s a disappointing birthday present for a child called Tom.

  4. Who needs PS4 when the PS3 still has so much potential (or so we’re told)? 3D, Move, not to mention the games are still realizing the systems full graphical potential. It’s a great time for early and late adopters. Tis the beauty of firmware updates.

    • Just wait unti something new and abbreviated comes out like, FE for “Full Experience” comes out and it becomes the new HD.

      • Of course. I remember playing my brand spankin’ new PS2 thinking ‘what’ll they think of next?’ things like online play, HD, motion control weren’t even on my radar. So of course something new will come out, but as of now it seems alien, even impossible.

    • Exactly. We’re told that a lot of devs aren’t even using half of the PS3’s power!

  5. I still easily see Ninty being the first out of the gates since, like he says, the Wii didn’t push any hardware boundaries and was also released fairly early.
I would love to see them release a ‘proper’ console next gen since they have built up a great market share and, presumably, a healthy wad!
I fully expect the PS4 to be the latecomer and actually I can see console launches falling quite out of sync with each other over the next 10 years or so.

    • yea and me. i think who ever releases first will just put the bar there for the other two company’s to jump over. We will never have equal consoles ever again. one will always be superior than the other. Only downside is that multiplat games will run with the lowest and not use the best machine to its fullest

    • playstation is a sleeping dragon it takes an age to wake up but when it does it incinerates everything in its path

nintendo has a remarkable ability to print money

microsoft are american give them a manopaly or else (they will make lots of noise and throw stones)

  6. Whatever the case, it’s all a few years away from now. Sony are going to stick to their 10 year console life span, which means the PS3 has a good 3 years to go before being superseded.

Meanwhile, MS stole the lead and are ahead of Sony, so they’re going to wait as long as they can before they need to release…

In other words, this is barely even a rumour, let alone actual news. I don’t begrudge TSA reporting it, but it’s the rest of the gaming press’ insatiable obsession with everyone releasing new stuff tomorrow. Stupid.

  7. Is this a possible “Kansas City Shuffle” from Yoshida,

    • p.s or is Yoshida putting Sony down as the underdog for the next gen. Its like chess, once MS or Nintendo make their move Sony are free to adjust their move accordingly

      • That’s why many think Microsoft is so standoffish about Kinect pricing, to gauge market response and undersell the competition. Not exactly the same but it’s an interesting strategy.

  8. I remember the backlash against Sony for releasing late and their big dogs just calmly telling us all they were playing the long game. At the time, everyone was like ‘you are blind, look how MS is shitting on you’ but now, well, looks like they knew what they were doing after all!

    • Agreed. Sony seem to be playing the smart game, and have been from the start. Viva la PS3 :)

    • They know what they are doing? are you sure?

They are STILL in 3rd position in global sales and only retently they started making profits from every console sold, desperatelty trying to get the attention of the casual market. Compare that with the mid-years of the PS2.

I dont think they like what they see even if they have made important progress, and i still think that the late and overprized release of PS3 has really damaged them, and they should not repeat it.

It certainly IS the best console, so i hope they can get back to 1st!

  9. It took me 2 yrs after ps3’s release to actually get one so ps4 does not interest me atm lol

    • I’ve only had mine for about a year so I know what you’re on about. I’m still thinking that it’s too soon for PS4 a little bit. But like they said, there’s ways to go yet.

      • I have only had mine for 4 Days so i agree that i wont be getting a upgrade anytime soon.

but when the PS4 does come out i will kill anyone and everyone in my way just to obtain one

(oh, i hope the PS4 does therapy)

  10. I have a feeling PS4 will come 2013/2014. As it fits in with the ten year lifespan, as games will still be released for the PS3 for a number of years like the PS2 has now.

I hope both Microsoft and Sony don’t release anything new for a while, there is no need for it currently whatsoever. And I don’t think my bank balance will be able to take another console anytime soon !
