Rumour: Del Toro Working With Volition On New RPG?

A couple of weeks back, legendary film writer and director Guillermo del Toro revealed to MTV News that he was working on  a game with an unnnammed “big company”, and today the rumour mill has ground up a doozy: apparently del Toro is working with Volition, the developer behind the Saints Row and Red Faction games.

Whilst it may seem a bit like clutching at seemingly random straws, it does make a surprising amount of sense given what we know. Del Toro is working on a game that is apparently “technically and narratively very interesting”. THQ’s Danny Bilson mentioned in an interview during E3 that “We’re seeking out some of the best talent in the world to build games for us. They [Itagaki-san and the Devil’s Third team] were the first. You’re going to see two more announcements in the next six months of major talent coming to work here at THQ as well, and I’m really excited about what that’s going to do for our line-up…We are at THQ Core an artists-driven company.”

Then last week the word on the internet was that del Toro is “set to finalise a deal with THQ”. A report in the LA Times claimed that the deal between the two was personally brokered by the head of THQ Core, Danny Bilson. Following that, this week a new job listing popped up on the Volition website, looking for a “Design Director for a new action role-playing game”. The really interesting bit? “We are collaborating with a high-powered creative talent in the entertainment industry to develop this original, unannounced franchise.” Certainly sounds like it could be del Toro, given the evidence above.

Of course, it could all be a big coincidence and del Toro could be about to announce a deal with EA Partners. Both del Toro and Danny Bilson have mentioned that they have big announcements in the coming months, so at least we won’t have too long to wait to find out what’s going on.
