Crytek UK Talk TimeSplitters

Speaking to Eurogamer, Crytek UK – formerly Free Radical Design – are talking to publishers about what their next game might be, with one title in particular getting a special mention. Recognising the brand recognition of the TimeSplitters series, Managing Director Karl Hilton admits that they’d love to do another one, the possibility of more multiplayer themed jaunts through time dependent on publishers’ reaction to the prospect. He states:

“We’re talking to publishers at the moment about whether that’s TimeSplitters a viable route or not. There hasn’t been a TimeSplitters game for quite a while. Obviously TimeSplitters is a FPS with a strong multiplayer element. The question is, is that the way to go with another one, or should it go down a different route, or should we be developing a new IP altogether? It’s down to us talking to publishers about what their interest is and where they see it going. If they’re keen for a TS game, then we’d be happy to do one. If they’d like us to develop something new then we’d do that.”

Hilton goes on to mention how the original TimeSplitters games were noted for their humour and Britishness, traits he ensures would not be dropped just to appeal to a wider market. He continues:

“I don’t think it’s about sacrificing the Britishness. It’s about working out with a publisher what’s the characteristic and personality of the game. Every good game should have a personality. When you play it you should feel from the way it plays and the way it looks what it is you’re playing, otherwise you can get a very mediocre product.”

Crytek purchased Free Radical Design (and hence the TimeSplitters IP) in February 2009 after the Nottingham studio went into administration.

  1. I’d love a new Timesplitters game. I put many, many hours into Timesplitters 2 on the PS2. Lots of fond memories. Maybe they should release a “Timesplitters HD Collection” with Timesplitters 1, 2 and Future Perfect all on one Blu-ray ala Prince of Persia, God of War etc… I’d buy it…

  2. Timesplitters.. to my opionion the best console FPS there is.. controls are supreme..

  3. Anyone honestly played it recently? It’s aged so badly. So very badly. We’ve very much moved on. If they can maintain the essence of TimeSplitters but bring it bang-up-to-date with everything we’ve come to expect then it might turn out okay.

    • I suppose Twisted Metal is the same. We will see how that turns out next year.

  4. ive never played a timesplitters game, maybe worth keeping an eye on

  5. Even though there hasn’t been a Timesplitters game in years, the series still has a big following. If they implemented the map creator for online play, this could be a monster title! Come on publishers, you know it makes sense.

  6. TS2 is one of my favourite games ever and I honestly lost count how many hours I put into that game. The FPS genre has certainly moved on since Future Perfect was released but I think FR would do a great job at modernising the series whilst keeping the TimeSplitters charm :)

    • The charm must return… My wallpaper is still the Monkey head in the style of the Gears of War logo :D

  7. on the ps3 crytek should create a TS running on the cryengine. With the real time enviroments the game would be immense.

  8. Like many, I have very fond memories of the TimeSplitters series. Now while an HD collection could be great, I would rather have a brand new outing for the series. TS2 was such an improvement over the original, and Future Perfect was quite an improvement over some parts TS2 (e.g. the map creator).

Would be very interesting to see if Crytek could bring the TimeSplitters series up-to-date, whilst keeping the brilliant artistic style and barrels of fun the previous games had.

Need to bring flame tag back, don’t know why it wasn’t in Future Perfect.

Oh and monkeys, got have monkeys. Obviously.

  9. I would die for a new Timesplitters or even a HD collection (hell, both of them!). I’ve spent many hours in Timesplitters multiplayer and using the map editor

  10. It’s all about ducks with twin Uzis – monkeys yes, but for me it was the ducks – hilarious, manic and immense fun to play!
