Guerrilla Will Aggressively Monitor Cheaters

We hate cheaters. Hate them. We don’t hate curious people who want to mess around with their hardware in the interest of learning something new and educating themselves, but when it comes to those who purposely engage in online chicanery that results in a loss of enjoyment for others … oooh, hate.

But let’s face it: online cheating is hardly something that can be solved with a wave of a magic Gameshark-shaped wand. That said, it’s always nice to hear when developers come forward and state they’re actively keeping an eye on their new game to make sure those who refuse to play by the rules are singled out and beaten with a stick.

Speaking to CVG, Guerilla’s Steven Ter Heide has assured that those who simply want to enjoy shooting Helghast dogs/ISA scum in the face in the imminent Killzone 3 will be able to do so unhindered by shifty digital charlatans. He states:

The ability for one person to ruin people’s games is not a good prospect obviously, so we’re working with Sony on the moderation side.

We’re looking at people misbehaving, being able to follow reports against those so that’s all been taken care of – and we’re working with Sony to see, even more aggressively, what kind of things are happening.

But at the same time we have to step up as developers and say, ‘OK what are the holes in our game, what is the data, can we analyse that and see where the problems might be?’

We can look at the leaderboards and the stats that most people are playing with and say, ‘This doesn’t look right. Can we look into that and see what’s happening?’ That’s the reality now, we have to keep patching the game to make sure we keep getting one over the hackers.

  1. The infiltrator class is already cheating.

  2. This may make no sense, but someone who is more tech savvy will have to explain the (im)possibility of this. But cheats alter the code of the game right? I remember that the xploder cartridge for the PS1 and disk for the PS2 use to render parts of games unplayable or send them funny. But couldn’t this be used by devs to purosely affet someones gameplay if they are hacking and using cheats? Or is it too different?

    • Wow, I like the word ‘But’!

      • i like big buts and i can not lie. . . .

  3. After reading the sub heading i was really hoping they’d found a way of making the characters of people who do cheat explode in the game. that would be interesting!

    • I’m working on it.

    • That would be hilarious, kinda like they did with the Michael Jackson games DRM, where they played vuvuzelas over all the songs when they detected illegal devices. They ruin other peoples games, then their games should be ruined.

    • The only issue with the grief reports is that people who are good may get false reports.
I play a certain game and i get accused of hacking purely because i’m good at it, despite being unable to email half the time people think i have the ability and time to spend hours doing my best to hack a game purely for some cheap thrill when on a leaderboard, so that my cyber name comes top and i get that celebrity status…. which is so highly regarded until the next loading screen appears!

  4. Cheating will not be tolerated! I have spoken.

  5. they should make it public ally clear on someones stats that there a cheat,

    • I’d prefer they just give one warning (though that might be too kind), then if they detect more cheating, console = permabanned.

  6. Loving this game so far! Big step forward in my opinion over Killzone 2. Still havnt got round to trying out the multiplayer yet. Are the servers online?

Big thanks to shopto for getting me the game a couple of days early! I’m glad I had some holiday left from last year :D

    • The servers are online. They were done today from 12:00 – 14:00 GMT but should be back up by now.

  7. like how Microsoft do with there gamer tag

  8. I wonder how strict they will be. The TSA clan was noted for its fair play approach. Do they see fair play the way we do?

  9. They should just make cheaters bright pink and unable to cause damage of any kind. Or initiate a special game mode when a cheater joins the game, everybody on him!

  10. For me, it’s about support after the game is “new”….like 12-18 months after release. Then I’ll be impressed that they’re monitoring cheats. Of course they’re going to monitor cheats initially.
