Rage Requires 3 Discs On 360, 8 GB Install on PS3

At the Eurogamer Expo, the creative director for Rage has confirmed that the game will release on three discs for 360 and will have an 8GB install on PS3.

In an interview with Digital Foundry, Tim Willets also gave a rundown of the various installation options available  for Rage players on 360.

“We recommend installing the game to the hard drive, but you don’t need to install all three discs. If you don’t have the space available on your hard drive, don’t stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you’re done, uninstall and install disc two.”

  1. 8 gigs make it the smallest installation on any platform, and it’s used, most likely among other things, to load high-res textures. This COULD mean that the PS3 version uses the famous “mega-textures”, but I wouldn’t count on it just yet. If I had the money I’d buy this game close to launch, but I’ll probably wait until next year.

    • Not criticising what you have said of course, but you realise that the 8GB is just the standard PS3 install (which usually weigh in t around about 2-3GB) & not the whole game right?

It really isn’t the smallest installation on any platform – Especially when Uncharted etc don’t need one at all (as was mentioned before).

      • I do understand that it’s the mandatory normal install, but it’s still the smallest one FOR THIS GAME (guess I didn’t make that clear enough :-/), I’m trying to put it in some good light as it’s getting a lot of flak on the webs. But it would have been preferable if it was optional, not sure why they couldn’t have a mandatory install on 2-3 gb and make this optional, but I’m sure they have their reasons. Also I’ve got a feeling this install has to do with the game running in 60FPS, and needing resources fed faster than a 30FPS game like Uncharted. As it’s quicker to load stuff from the HDD than the Blu-Ray.

It would be nice to be able to underscore text. Because I’m trying to put more weight to parts of my commments, but when I read it in my head I feel like it comes off as yelling since I’m using capital letters, which makes me seem agressive.

      • Ah, i see – I’m with you now.

It’s just a shame for me tbh, as i see the 8GB mandatory install & that puts me right off without even seeing any gameplay or anything. Pity.

I know what you mean about things seeming ‘shouty’ when in capitals though, but as you say, there isn’t much that can be done about that really, so i wouldn’t worry too much.

      • Nice to have you onboard! :-)
I’ve got a couple hundred GB left so I’m not put off by anything but the fact that there are so many other games I’d rather buy in the coming months.

I guess we’ll just have to wait for the reviews to start ticking in to see if it’s worth it.

    • Excuse my spelling & grammar fail;

      & ‘doesn’t’ not ‘don’t’

Disgraceful stuff from me there! I am hanging my head in shame.

      • Lol don’t worry we all make grammar fails :P

  2. “If you don’t have the space available on your hard drive, don’t stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you’re done, uninstall and install disc two.”

best instructions ever. don’t stress, I repeat, don’t stress, just do as you are told.

  3. will wait till after release before i make any buying decisions about this game.

  4. What i have seen of it so far i won’t be buying & installing it. Yeah, yeah they made DOOM & Quake ‘so what?’ It don’t mean this will be as classic as those 2 games that where made billions of years ago LoL

    • Wild guess. You were born in the 90s.

    • Wait, there were games a billion years ago!? :O Quick someone tell a scientist as they will be interested to see the prehistoric games. ;)

ID software is known for Doom which is often said to be the granddaddy of FPS along with Wolfestein. I believe that they will bring us a fantastic game. :)

  5. Sony should ban games that aren’t properly developed for the PS3, 2GB should be the max install allowed for any game. It’s 2011!

If KZ3 got away with only like 6MB HDD space required, all PS3 games should follow its lead.

    • Yeah, let’s keep games off one console because all developers should be developing a certain way. Let’s deny gamers great games because of the negligible hindrance of having to install games.

That sounds like an awesome idea.

    • Just because one developer can create a game with little to no install does not mean all developers are capable of the same feat. Killzone 3 was a single-platform game that was optimzed for the console and was around 60gb in size. Rage is a multiplatform game that been made to work on the console and is around 1tb in size. Go figure.

    • Sony were the ones that allowed id to make the 8GB install.
And I see your point, but it’s not always possible without compromizing too much.

  6. Never interested in Rage, looked dull…but 8gb?.. that kills it for me.

  7. I still have the fat ps3 from launch which i think was 60gb so my hard drive will defo not be able to handle an 8gb game.
