Resident Evil Code: Veronica X – PS2 vs PS3

Lighting makes all the difference.

Resident Evil 4 HD wasn’t exactly a giant leap forward in terms of visuals. It’s basically the Gamecube version at a higher resolution. Of course, that’s not exactly a bad thing, but it does feel like Capcom could have done more.

So what about Resident Evil Code: Veronica X HD? Is it just another “lazy” port? Not exactly. Although it’s obviously the same game, numerous improvements have been made. The most notable addition is the inclusion of dynamic lighting. Characters actually cast shadows now and it makes the game look so much better. There’s also proper widescreen support and updated menus.

I included a video with footage from the PS2 and PS3 versions of Code: Veronica X so you can see the differences for yourself. It’s pretty much night and day (except for the FMVs).

  1. you know what PS2 game still looks good? Kingdom hearts 2

  2. The game looks old. Not retro, not classic, just old. So glad the RE series moved away from this play style

  3. Just had a blast on it on my ps2, still looks good. Not as good as MGS but good…

  4. Now all we need is to compare it to the dreamcast version.

  5. Thats an awesome visual update given we are talking about an HD upgrade, not a full-blown remake.
Hopefully Resi 2 and 3 make it to the PSN soon so I can have the entire series (with the exception of zero of course =[) on my PS3 HDD :D

  6. I plan on getting this as i think CVX was the last main resi game to use the classic style. I remeber it being a bit hard though although, i wasn’t as skilled at gaming as i am today. :) If only they would release both on one disc to save HDD space. Not all of us have 320GB+. :(

    • Depends if you consider them keepers or not. Ebay have plenty of the disk based ones that you could import. Not too pricey either
