Folding@home November Stats

Bit late I know, but it’s not my fault, it’s a combination of Uni, Sony and Uncharted 3, so blame them! I did get some basic stats collected on the 1st, which is basically these, so I thought I’d recollect them today (5th).

October Highlights

As per usual, it’s this lot again:

SilverCider has managed to fold himself into 2nd place, kicking me down. Thankfully his reign of being 2nd will only last a few months as our Russian machine Deathbrin powers on home, by folding over 900,000 since the first of October. Meanwhile RedStarGlow has reaffirmed his position as the number 1 active folder by producing 40,000 points per week more than Deathbrin.

What is Folding@Home?

It is an application the makes use of your PC, MAC or PS3’s processing power to solve biological puzzles. These particular puzzles are looking at how protein molecules assemble themselves or ‘fold’. Proteins are exceptionally important molecules and F@H’s biomedical research is currently studying diseases like Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and cancer as well as working to develop new antibiotics.

Other research aided by F@H recently has been the study of the influenza virus looking at how mutations might affect transmission rates of different strains of the virus to help predict and understand future pandemics. It is not only biomedical science that benefits either. In 2009 two of the principal scientists behind F@H presented a paper entitled “Folding@home: lessons from eight years of distributed computing” at the IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium.

By contributing to F@H you are helping advance biology, chemistry and computer science, you get to do your bit for the good of humanity, become part of the most powerful distributed computing cluster in the world, according to Guinness, and join in with TSA’s community. If you often listen to music stored on your PS3′s HDD then your PS3 could be Folding while you listen. So go on, join our team and see how high you can climb in our list of TSA’s top 50 folders.

How do you Join the Team?

The first step is to make sure that you change your PC/PS3’s F@H identity from the default to your TSA ID. It could be anything but if you use your TSA ID it will help us recognise you. Then you will need to tell the F@H application you want to be in our team.

Next for stats…

  1. I have been slacking on Folding this month, with a 24h power outage and then Battlefield 3 mp (this thing is just too demanding to leave the clients on, and i tend to forget turning them back on after). But now with MW3 being on 360 which frees the PC i’ll have a good chance to give RedStar some FIREWORKS!

    • Was wondering why you dropped to 2nd, although not as much as wondering how we managed 6.6 million over 36 days. Makes me think back to the pre-million months.

    • Battlefield 3 has been eating away at my folding too! I imagine it might carry on doing so over the next few months. We had brilliant FIREWORKS!

  2. I would be folding but in its infinite wisdom my university’s firewall blocks many things including folding and the ps network shame as i was starting to catch up :(

    • Hmmm, most odd, maybe they don’t like you connecting to other universities.

  3. Yay, top 50! A cause for celebration with fireworks.

    • Me too! Used all my fireworks last night, so I’ll just have to celebrate with alcohol like usual

  4. Starting to make a dent it seems. Mostly down to my house mates computer churning out WU’s worth big points. Fireworks are on the horizon tonight!

  5. Nice update, thanks! There’s a good website: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=78731 which nicely collates all kinds of statistics and the like which can really set off the competitor in you, generating all kinds of fireworks.

    • That’s what I use for the team stats, plus links are in the forums ;)

  6. light the fireworks, i broke the top 100.

    will anybody ever overtake Red?
    doesn’t look like it.

    • Deathbrin is capable when he’s not playing battlefield.

  7. Cnutard is ahead of me on points now, he seems to have a quarter of the work units but more points. Makes me wonder what I’m doing wrong…

    Oh, and FIREWORKS! :)

    • Nothing, depends on your hardware.

    • Half of those WUs are from my PS3, the other half are from my house mates computer. His graphics card is doing WUs worth 2000 points, whereas the PS3 WUs are only worth 250.

      • Ah right, I think the limits of what I can fold are restricted by the software available for Mac.

  8. Finally started folding today after last nights FIREWORKS!

  9. Steady as she goes, save the fireworks for the next big push. :)

  10. Nowadays, FIREWORKS always make me think of that Katie Perry song/thing. Shooting from her breast area. You’re think of the song right now, aren’t ya? ;)
