BBFC Defends MW3 London Level, Daily Mail Ignores

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) have released their classification for Modern Warfare 3 which, as you would expect, is an 18 for strong bloody battle violence.

One section of the game takes place on a fictional version of the London Underground and David Cooke, director of the BBFC, has made the following statement.

In reaching its decision the BBFC has given careful consideration both to the depiction of action on the Underground and elsewhere in London and the context in which that action takes place.

The game neither draws upon nor resembles real terrorist attacks on the Underground.

Let’s just read that last line again, “The game neither draws upon nor resembles real terrorist attacks on the Underground”.

So why has the Daily Mail peppered their report “Call Of Duty computer game featuring 7/7 Tube bomb-style attacks approved by censors” with pictures from the terrorist bombings in London?

  1. If anything surely battlefield 3s opening is more like the 7/7 bombings. Granted it’s not in London but still. It’s at least a bit closer to a ‘bomb plot on a train’ than mw3s level.

  2. It’s just a game for gods sake. Soldiers get shot, killed injured etc when they are away at war. People still play war games.
I really dont understand why it is being made into such a big deal. It is not real. If devs had to avoid everything that was similar to life in some way we would have pretty slim pickings as far as good games go.

  3. Surprised they haven’t picked it up as they go ape on anything slight bad in gaming. This is terrible and I find it quite offensive tbh.

    • the level/video I meant is offensive.

  4. could see this coming. although i don’t agree with the way cod is doing this is i think the act of terrorism is important to consider and look at from different angles and for the reasons people commit the act. As far as the mail are concerned to me it says “we need headlines to spice it up to scare people”

  5. Wasn’t their a bit on the trailer that showed a train exploding in London?

  6. Seems like Activision are advertising with controversy again. I wonder if the daily mail recognise the wonderful irony of the fact they’re probably helping it make more money

    • Honestly, they’re too apopleptic with rage about this, immigrants or teenagers to even consider that fact mate.

  7. “So why has the Daily Mail peppered their report “Call Of Duty computer game featuring 7/7 Tube bomb-style attacks approved by censors” with pictures from the terrorist bombings in London?”

Simply put, because they are pricks. For all the import of the Daily Mails paranoid journalism and impotent readership, we can easily ignore pretty much anything it prints.

The Mail represents a particularly odious viewpoint on most things, especially social issues, so why worry what their opinion is on anything? Better to ignore them and pat them gently on the head and send them back to their angry, paranoid, little corner to stew until the next “moral outrage” drops through the letterbox tomorrow.

Sorry if that’s a bit strong but, honestly, that paper supported fascism during the run up to WW2 and their attitudes to social issues and don’t seem to have changed much in the intervening years. I choose to treat their opinions with the scorn and casual disregard that they so rightly deserve.

  8. Just wait til GTA V comes out.
“A man robs a diamond bank then murders a security guard with a dildo in GTA style rampage.”
It seems rather ironic that I read more factual information on the internet than in daily newspapers. Still, I suppose they have to “sell” the newspaper

  9. You have to remember that the daily fail lives in its own little bubble where it attacks anything outside want it wants. If it had its way it would shut down the entire game industry because as far as its concerned, we can’t tell the difference between games and the real life so we must be all sick.

  10. What is it with anything with a Conservative/Republican media view of games? Why have all video games are evil, blar, blar.

Fox News is very openly Republican
Dail Mail is very openly Conservative.

You could say this is starting to look like a conspiracy theory. How do you contact Alex Jones?
