PlatinumGames Defend Metal Gear Rising

Atsushi Inaba , executive director and producer at Platinum Games, has been defending their upcoming game, Metal Gear Rising.

He is obviously aware that the hack and slash, arcade action gameplay may not be to everyone’s tastes as he has tweeted the following:

“Let me begin.

It seems there are some who wish to imply PlatinumGames was able to achieve what Kojima Productions could not — interviewers among them.

This notion is spurious. Clearly, we have not yet produced any results in the world of Metal Gear.

The artists at Kojima Productions gave their blood, sweat and tears to bring the Metal Gear Saga to life.

The gap is immense. Mr. Kojima tossed his chips on our table, believing we could handle the task. In other words, he took a gamble.

Many seem to think the change from MGSR to MGR altered everything about the game, but this is simply not true.

MGSR’s concept excited us. We have love and respect for it, as we do the character of Raiden and the idea of freely cutting anything apart.

I know reaction to the new trailer is mixed. Yet I also believe our love and respect shines through.

It is my hope that you catch a glimpse of the future in the footage.

In order to achieve that evolution, that future, we at PlatinumGames will continue to fight, shedding our own blood, sweat and tears.

That is all.”

  1. Seems a fair tweet. Nice to be reassured they love and respect the series – hopefully not a case of milking the series.

Too early to judge them harshly me thinks, we need to see more of the game first.

    • Agreed, they seem to be fans at least.

I hope to be positively surprised by this game. They just need to remember that the MGS games are built with realism meeting ridiculousness, they need to get the mix right for this to work.

      • Yep, them being fans should bode well.

It is a spin-off so they are allowed to drift a bit from a typical Snake MGS, it’ll open up the franchise to people who maybe didn’t enjoy the play-style of MGS. Admittedly I was put-off at the first trailer ages ago, but being a MGS fan and if it’s executed well, I hope I’m pleasantly surprised! It’s way too early to judge in my opinion.

      • Yeah we haven’t seen nearly enough to support any definitive opinions on the game.

These guys did do a good job on Vanquish (or so I’ve heard), and cyborg-ninja Raiden is awesome. Also according to that Related Stories link in the top right the Peacewalker dev team has been helping too. The more the merrier I guess, and they definitely know their stuff.

  2. Half of this doesn’t make sense. I’d like him to explain clearly before going on a fanboy rant about hiw he’s fucking up my favourite entertainment series.

    • haha. spot on! MGS ended at 4. Just feels like a whoring exercise to me.

  3. Isn’t this what everyone expected from the first trailer though? I did.

Incidentally, I’ve just seen a typically comical comment on the Youtube page for the trailer (censored for TSA):

“The only game that should have Raiden in present times should be about him waking up, cooking f***ing breakfast for his family, going to work, f***ing Rose, taking care of his kid, and going to sleep. Not necessarily in that order but that is it. That’s what he does now. Cooking Mama: Former Cyborg Ninja Edition God Damnit!”

I sometimes think I’m the only person on Youtube without serious issues.

    • To be fair it’s an accurate statement.

      • Which one? Do I actually have issues? ;-)

  4. yet another sequel that takes it’s series in a totally different direction.

still it could have been worse.
they could have turned it into generic COD clone fps number 349823648.

they turned it into generic Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden clone number 387.

it’s entering a lot less flooded market, it has that in it’s favour.

  5. Don’t get all the hate. Platinum have made Bayonetta+Vanquish which are awesome. They have profile with hack’n’slash as well as fast paced games.

  6. I dont really understand. I was under the impression that Metal Gear Rising is a spin off, and not part of the Metal Gear Solid main series. Why hate on something that expands on an already amazing franchise? Yes, it doesnt seem to feature any stealth aspects that we have come to love from the main metal gear solid story arc, but if handing over the reins of Metal Gear Rising to Platinum Games means that Kojima can concentrate his efforts on making a possible MGS5 or another game, whats the problem?

    • Couldn’t have put it better myself. Plus plat can make excellent fast paced games so there isn’t a problem well not likely :P

    • I think the main issue is this looks fairly different to how the game did when it was originally shown at E3.

      • Agreed, the game looks different to how it looked way back when in 2009. I think a little faith has to be put in PlatinumGames as they have a very good track record with these types of games. A lot of games take a side step in art style, direction and visuals during development (Borderlands being my most poinent example) and in a high percentage of examples, its for the betterment of the game.

  7. Would rather have seen them making a new IP.

  8. I don’t know about this game it does look like it has a lot of action but i just don’t know

  9. ‘Revengeance’ is the subtitle its not even a real word. I know this is on purpose but it just seems like they fucked up :P

    • Expect Metal Gear Solid 5: Transfarring to be announced anytime now.

  10. I, for one am not a huge fan of the usual Metal Gear Solid play style so this game looks pretty appealing to me. I think it has the potential to be more than just an out and out slash ’em up, whether that will be the case remains to be seen I suppose.
