GameStop Cancels The Last Guardian Pre-orders

Worrying news this evening, as it seems that GameStop has been calling customers who have pre-ordered PS3 exclusive The Last Guardian with the following message:

“Hello, this is GameStop calling with important news regarding your reservation. We’ve been notified by the vendor that The Last Guardian has been canceled. To reserve a different title or have your reservation money refunded, please go to your local store.

To repeat, we’ve been notified that the vendor has canceled production of the game The Last Guardian. If you have any questions please call your local store. Thank you. Goodbye.”

The game is no longer listed on the GameStop website. It is, however, still on the sites of other retailers. We await something official from Sony, and fingers crossed this is just an error.

Update: According to Kotaku,  Sony’s senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, says the game is still on. Hopefully this means it’s just a GameStop error.

Update 2: GameStop have backtracked. “The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers,” it said.

“Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system,” continues the statement. “The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known.”

  1. means nothing

    • Gamestop aren’t going to want to lose business for no reason

      • If you know Gamestop, you’d understand that that is something they could care less about. Their corporate practices are abysmally backdated.

      • Gamestop state they were contacted by the seller (Sony) telling them the game was cancelled. It is very hard to imagine how they could get a phantom phonecall by mistake. I have a fear its true.

      • @Jaffa: I’ve been following the conversation at NeoGAF, and it’s been posted there by Kagari (one of the admins) that GameStop did the very same thing with the PS3 version of Child of Eden. This is a generic message so I will not be surprised in the least if it’s the same asinine Gamestop shenanigans again.

      • i think isn’t probably best to assume its not true until confirmation from sony.

      • Sony denied it first thing.

  2. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I really hope it’s not been cancelled as a new IP is a breath of fresh air. It looked liked it would be a fantastic game. If it has been cancelled then that very disappointing. T_T

    • It’s not just a new IP, Its a Team Ico IP..

  3. Gutted if this is true :(

  4. What a bold move…. O.o?

  5. Hmm, we really need to see some new footage of this game to show that it’s still alive and kicking

  6. Gamestop is the most asinine retailer in the US. I’m betting this was just a generic message they sent since the game has been delayed for a while and the people who actually paid for their preorders (in this day and age, I find this amazing, considering Amazon and other companies’ no-charge policy on preorders) have had their orders in for a while.

Expanding on Seybold’s statement, Fumito Ueda only recently confirmed the game was very much still in production. If it was canceled, surely Japan would have heard first, not Gamestop!

  7. What about the preorders for Battletoads 2?

  8. Having visited Gamestop quite a few times and used the website, anything they say or do has as much meaning as a blank piece of paper. The Patrick Seybold update doesn’t surprise me in the least.

  9. Right.
