XCOM: Enemy Unknown Announced

Game Informer’s February cover has been revealed, showing that a new XCOM game is in development. Titled ‘Enemy Unknown’, it’s a “full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force”, and not to be confused with the XCOM first person shooter that’s also on the way.

Development duties fall to Firaxis Games.

  1. LOVED the original UFO game.

Can’t wait to see this come together, though I wonder what the battle system will be like. Later XCOM games had a hybrid turn based and real time system that seemed quite cool.

  2. Ooh! Hopefully Game Informer will be in the post today then! :D I must confess to being more interested in the ME3 bit in the top corner than XCOM, though I’ll read it all anyway. :)

  3. Awesome. Dimension missile launchers are still one of my favourite game weapons of all time. Will be keeping a close eye on this one!

  4. That’s a surprise – now i’m looking forward to both of them! i wonder if this one will be a PSN download.

  5. Loved the 1st UFO game, actually it’s one of may favorite games ever! Hope this one will be more like the 1st ones than those “wannabes” released after Appocalypse (the 3rd in the series).

    • Seconded, this is great news indeed, loved Apocalypse, one of my favourite games of all time.

  6. Pretty please with sugar on top, be close to the original.

  7. Superb, though doesnt this follow up on a TSA story from a few months back?

    • “not to be confused with the XCOM shooter thats also on the way”

      Stupid me.

  8. I love a good strategy game, count me in :)

  9. I played the old original xcom a lot and a lot of the even more original precursor Lazer Squad on Amiga (anyone remember that?). This could be very good if they stay true to the best bits of the original and throw.in some innovative online play. If it’s turn based, a quick load way of sending a moves to people who are offline through psn would be good. They could then pick this up and respond like chess. I remember an old hasbro xcom game which worked like this.

    • Laser Squad is one of my favorite games of all time back on my Amstrad. Oh the nostalga of wating 10+ minutes for a game to load while the data on the cassette screamed at you like a 14k modem. I refuse to play the flash versions available now because I know it will ruin the great memories. I also loved it’s lesser known follow up Lords Of Chaos which was basically the same game with a fantasy setting instead of sci-fi. I also played and loved the first UFO:Enemy Unknown and it’s under appreciated follow up/expansion Terror From The Deep. I’m looking forward to this new X-Com:Enemy Unknown moreso than the FPS version.

      • I forgot to mention that I really hope Julian Gollop has some sort of creative hand in the new one too.

      • Didn’t know about the follow up to Lazer Squad, Lords of Chaos! That’s mental.

      • I’d forgotten all about lazer squad, awesome game, had it on me old Amstrad and wrote a super gory story about it just to piss of my Thomas Hardy loving GCSE English teacher.

  10. Makes sense for Firaxis to develop it, if I remember rightly, Microprose developed the original XCom, and both Microprose and Firaxis were founded (in part at least) by Sid Meier, so the new game is in pretty safe hands.
