WipEout 2048 Has An Online Pass

Much like Everybody’s Golf 6, Sony’s first party title WipEout 2048 requires an online pass to make the most of it.  And, just like the former title, buying the game from the PlayStation Store means you’ll automatically get an online pass too, despite what the rest of the internet said a week or so back.

[videoyoutube]And of course, if you buy WipEout 2048 from a physical store, it’ll have a code in the box which activates an online pass for your console.

However, buy it second hand or rent it and you’ll need to buy a ‘Network Pass’ from the PSN Store, if you don’t some of the game’s cooler features, like (obviously) online play and (rather surprisingly and certain to ruffle a few feathers) the much anticipated PS3-Vita Cross Play, won’t work.

And annoyingly, because the UK PSN Store isn’t up yet, we can’t test those features as the game won’t authenticate our pass – it tries every time we load up the game or try to jump online.

Regardless, I’ve shown WipEout 2048 to a few people recently and everyone agrees: this is the game that best shows off the system – it’s visually the best thing on there and is utterly amazing with a decent pair of headphones, the near-future whine of the vehicles a real treat.

We’ll have a review of the single player as soon as possible.

  1. Do you know if you need to buy 2 copies of the game to play PS3/Vita cross play?

This is this far one of the Vita’s few remaining attributes that I’m pinning my hopes on.

Go on retailers, drop it below £200, you know you want to.

    • No, I think it works with Wipeout HD Fury.

  2. Question: Is the “PS3-Vita Cross Play” proper cross play, or are Sony trying to pull that Modnation stuff again?

    • It’s proper cross-play. Can’t test it yet though.

      • ooh nice, let us know when you get to try it!

  3. I’m assuming the cross play is local only? Or can you race online with your vita against ps3 players?

    • yes you can play online cross play with other psvitas and ps3.

  4. Is this a story? I’m not sure why…

    • It’s just a hype update: Vita with wipeout is awesome, reviewing it soon. P.s. it’s good with headphones.

      Fine by me..

  5. Can you actually rent Vita games? I’ve not seen them appearing on the standard sites yet. You can normally add games months before release on Lovfilm but there isn’t a single Vita game on there yet with 5 weeks to go.

  6. Meh, not gonna buy then.

  7. Are we getting a new story for every game that has an online pass? Seems pointless really.

    • +1 We all know that every sony 1st Party games will have online pass from now on

    • Lest us not forget that MNR PSP was one of (if not the) very first game to have an online pass. They are here and not going anywhere soon.

    • It’s very useful news to me because I won’t be buying any second-hand games that require onilne passes and I can’t afford new games at the moment.

  8. This will be one of my first purchases for Vita. Looks brilliant and cross play sounds great. Bit of a shame cross play requires the Pass but you are playing over PSN so I guess it makes sense.

  9. Never bought a 2nd hand game that needs an online pass, yet.

  10. I’m not surprised to be honest.I would have been surprised if the PSN vita store for the Uk was up before the release date for the Vita in the EU.

I’m surprised that the vita-PS3 feature doesn’t work. Surely, it could just use the remote play for the time being.
