What We Played #50

Welcome to WWP’s Golden Jubilee edition. Sort of, if weeks were years and sometimes it does feel like I’ve been writing these for a lifetime. We don’t have any celebrations planned and can’t offer you an extra bank holiday but at least Tuffcub’s been enjoying some golden gaming courtesy of the PS Vita’s Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

After struggling “for weeks” to find out how to “get the rubbing off the last fecking statue” his fingers finally made their way to the YouTube’s search box. His fingers have also been doing the walking across his PS Vita’s screen while he plays Treasures of Montezuma Blitz.

I think the developers have made a bit of a cock up here. Each day you get a number of ‘lives’ to play the game, run out of lives and you have to buy some more using real cash. The thing is, the Vita is a portable experience so most people will only play the game for a few minutes – I play it for the 15 minutes I’m on the tube and there is just enough lives to last the journey, as a result, I’m never going to give Alawar any cash.

[drop2]Many of you will be aware of the cause of the ‘fun’ Alex has been having this past week. “I’ve been playing ‘trying to keep the server alive’. On holiday. 1/10.” The mere fact you’re reading this though means he’s platinumed the game though he’s likely not hoping for a sequel.

Chris hasn’t been indulging in any PS3-hosted gaming either with his speed bump-profiles box relegated to streaming duties. His disillusionment with console gaming, which at times it is hard not to share, is still leaving him looking elsewhere for his gaming kicks.

This week saw me fire up the charming and utterly amazing 8-bit Night. A retro-styled platformer in which you flip the level along its x or y axis to reach previously inaccessible areas and to avoid the bad guys. If you’re a Windows user you can grab the 8-bit Night demo from Desura along with the full game for only £2.99, which is an absolute bargain.

Probably still recovering from his Free-2-Play efforts Jim’s also been playing comparatively little this week. He’s dabbled with Dead Island and had a run around in Uncharted 3’s multiplayer. Yet tugging him away from his console is the nominally Free-2-Play Warhammer Online: Wrath of Heroes.

To his surprise, especially as he’s “always despised Player vs Player encounters in MMOs”, he keeps sinking around an hour a day into playing a game which consists of nothing other than PvP gaming. “I even plan to throw the odd tenner at it every few weeks”, which must surely be the best recommendation that you should give the game a try if you can and haven’t.

My own gaming has been a scant hour or two of Skyrim, surely you’ve all found time to do better than that?

  1. Really not had time to play much this week due to work.
However, when I did get chance, I have really enjoyed Uncharted 3 :)
Still want to try out the Ghost Recon beta too!

  2. I’ve been playing Skyrim. Did Sheo’s quest a few nights ago. Restarted a few days ago. My current pure mage is a level 10 but i have forgotten to get the apprentice level spells so my mage is very underpowered. Oh and i’ve cocked up big time as i saved during a dragon fight. Just as it blasted me in the face with it’s breath so i may be forced to restart. :(

    • Check in the load menu, you may have an autosave not too far back with any luck, hope that helps bro.

  3. Nothing much this week, largely because it’s been filled with taking my wife for baby scans, working extra hours, etc.

I have given up on Witcher2 until they fix the crappy map. Running round in circles for hours trying to find where the f’ing thing wants you to go isn’t my definition of fun, lol. A shame as the rest of the game is stunning.

Played a bit in Xenoblade Chronicles earlier in the week. Seems great, especially when you consider it’s all running on a Ninty-Wii, but I haven’t put enough time in yet for it to really pull me in.

Other than that I made a start on Dead Island yesterday evening (which is a lot fun with a buddy), hopefully should get chance to play a little more over the weekend.

  4. Platinumed Uncharted: Golden Abyss, whoop, whoop – awesome game! Damn those Bounties are a pain in the arse though.

Then there’s been a couple of WipEout 2048 Meets – not played a combat racer since Mario Kart, and its just as fun and just as pretty! Actually, it’s probably more fun as there were 7 TSAers.

Then I’ve been continuing through my PS3 backlog: almost Platinumed Saw and have started my Hard playthrough of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. I wish I hadn’t played it on Normal so I could have avoided 3 playthroughs :(

Then finally a bit of the Ghost Recon beta, but gave up after I “Lost Connection to the Servers” twice! Then I started the first episode of The Walking Dead which has been a pleasant surprise as it wasn’t really on my radar and came out of nowhere – its fairly slow paced which makes a nice change and is visually awesome!

  5. Played Battlefield 3 with TSA every evening! Currently Rank 39 ^^
Also played Skate 3 for one trophy (Big thanks to Kronic and his mates, element and Forrest *thumbs up*)
Played Prototype and Sly (only an hour)
Also Walking Dead free trial last night.
Oh completely forgot to mention Payday The Hiest. I shoot Boomshanks and Rocket to split the 20mill for 8_bit and myself (10mill each) 5mill was too low. I don’t trust Boom and Rocket well he has a game that I don’t have – Resident Evil: Revelations!

    • What did you think of The Walking Dead?

Also, having RE:Revelations cost Rocket £5M?! Could you have not bought a copy out of your £5M? Would have been funny if 8_bit killed you after you had killed the other 2! ;)

      • 8_bit did fire a shot at me. Said it was an accident, but now I am not too sure…. Will keep an eye out next Thursday!

I really did enjoy Walking Dead, wasn’t what I expected it to be but still looks brilliant and I know I will love it. At the moment I want to wait and see wht PS+ will bring in a few months. In the meantime I still have enough games as it is.

      • Hmm, don’t trust him mate! Lol

Yeah, I didn’t really know what to expect but its different, apart from the zombies – they’re everywhere! Might be cost-effective option to wait.

    • Haha. Resi is awesome by the way :)

  6. Been engrossed with Wheelman from my backlog, but I just noticed last night that the new Seasonals on GT5 are Time Trials for Nurburgring and Spa (awesome choices), so I think they’ll be getting some playtime quicksharp!!

  7. Unit 13, Wipe out 2048 and Everybody’s Golf. Went back to SSX on PS3. It’s a sweet game.

  8. I hate it when I miss getting in on the reply to this :(

I played a fair amount of FIFA 12 DLC – UEFA Euro 2012 but it’s quite disappointing. I’ve got a review going up later so I won’t spoil that but let’s just say that it’s not as complete a package as I would have expected.

I also played some of the user generated levels on Trials Evolution. People are already making some insane stuff there and it’s only going to get better. That’s a great game that everyone should try, if they can.

Finally, I played a range of different 3D games for the PlayStation 3D Display review that I was working on. I think I liked Super Stardust and Tumble the most. Uncharted was a little disappointing and even distracting in 3D. Mostly, I was a little surprised at how few games there are in 3D, given how much it has been talked about over the past few years. It’s mostly Sony first party games. And no 3D movies on the PSN Video Store is a baffling omission.

  9. Finally finished Mass Effect 3 – took the synthesis option then watched all the other ‘different’ endings on YouTube.
Now I’ve only just started AC: Revelations. Really enjoyed AC2 and Brotherhood so am looking forward to getting into it.
On Vita I’m still struggling with the solo missions on Unit 13 – I hate the timed missions… All the other missions are great.

    • You mean, there are different endings? I thought all 3 were the same one just with different colours and minor details. Would have prefered if they did a slideshow telling us what happened after the events of ME3. DAO did it.

  10. Been taking part in the Automation beta on the PC, from Australian developers Camshaft Software. Looking good so far, reminiscent of ancient Amiga game Detroit. I’ve also logged a fair few hours in getting Middlesbrough to the top of the Premiership in the Masters League on PES2012, with all my lovely licensed players looking even lovelier (except Barry Robson) and, um, license-y thanks to the latest GTM file update.
