Max Payne 3 Smashes UK Charts, But Not By Much

Max Payne 3, as expected, has shot to the top of the UK sales charts after its first weekend, no doubt helped by reviews like ours – the game was widely acclaimed apart from a few 7s dotted around for effect.

However, figures coming in suggest it was only 8,000 sales above Diablo III, and the UK chart only counts boxed copies – if it tracked downloads Blizzard’s title would be way ahead.

Regardless, Rockstar’s third person shooter is only behind Mass Effect 3 for the biggest game launch this year so far, with 58% of sales of Max Payne 3 going towards the Xbox 360 version.

The rest of the chart is made up of FIFA Street, Sniper Elite V2, FIFA 12, Prototype 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and finally, in tenth, the latest Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games title.

  1. Very impressive sales from the single platform D3 then.

They really need to merge digital sales with retail, be interesting to see where the big sellers like Journey & Trials Evolution would fit in.

  2. Surely “smashes” implies quite a comfortable victory?

    • Exactly what I thought. “Smashes but not by much” is a contradiction in terms.

  3. Pretty impressive performance for Diablo 3, just shows a decent exclusive on PC can still shift in good numbers.

Max Payne is only out on Xbox & PS3 at the moment, right?

    • PC in 2 weeks. Moved because of Diablo III in fact. (Though I doubt Rockstar will admit that.)

    • Yep, it releases on PC at the end of the month.

  4. No surprise that another over-rated Rockstar game gets No1, Good for Diablo 3 but shame about the issues it has.

    • Have you played max Payne 3? I don’t think its at all over rated, in fact I think its under rated in many instances. One of my favourite games for a long time.

    • Not the biggest fan of R* games (hate GTA, wasn’t amazed by LA Noire) but I can safely say Max Payne 3 is one of the best games I’ve played all year. Terrific storyline and voice acting, simple and satisfying gameplay plus an addictive multiplayer mode.

      • This comment perfectly reflects my opinion. A person can’t say a game is over rated if they don’t like it, you’re meant to try and be objective with these things. There’s plenty of good games I just don’t like, doesn’t mean its over rated, just not my cup of tea.

      • Well said.

      • Also, I wish people would stop referring to LA Noire as a R* game, its not. It was NOT developed by rockstar.

  5. maybe the fact people can actually play max payne helped. ^_^

  6. Its all about Sorcery next week…

….or not. Move resurrection anyone? Need to find a duster or 3, maybe some premium strength cleanser. Hyperox could do the trick :)

    • Haha. No I wont be purchasing that on release just wait for the inevitable price crash in about 3 weeks

  7. Well deserved.

  8. That’s interesting, I definitely think it’s time for download sales (as along as they can be tracked accurately) to join the charts, as many games are going that way.
