Rockstar Strongly Hint That Planes Will Be In And Flyable In GTA V

You’ll have seen the two new screenshots of GTA V, and whilst one of them showed a helicopter, it’s in the text of Rockstar’s Newswire article that planes have been all but confirmed.

“The city was simply too small for effective and enjoyable flying,” says the publisher when asked why planes weren’t in GTA IV.

“It was the first time we made a high definition open world, and it was a massive amount of work to make something on that scale – we simply could not make an environment big enough for planes to work properly.”

“Fear not, they are returning in what is our biggest open world game to date.”

That ‘biggest open world game’ has to be GTA V.

They also comment on all the fakes and rumours. “All the way up until game launch (and probably beyond) there is going to be no shortage of non-stop hoaxes, faked footage and screens, rampant rumors and speculation,” said Rockstar.

“As a rule, we are not going to get into the game of confirming or denying each of these as they happen as there is simply too much of it. Half of them we don’t even understand.”

“One thing we’ll say definitively though is – there is absolutely no ‘beta’ test for the game. If you see ads or solicitations to join a beta program, beware as this could be a dodgy online phishing scam.”

  1. GTA VI? I think you mean GTA IV…

    • Where does it say ‘GTA VI’? I can’t find it, I’m pretty sure you misread it.
(I “Cntrl+F”‘d the page just to make sure). :-)

      • I suspect a ninja edit took place once this was queried. So it probably was there, but isn’t now. :)

      • New skill learned: Cntrl+F. Haha. I will remember that one.

    • Oh, aha! Ninja Editors :P

  2. Damn Right Skippy! I still to this day have not, yet believe I will succeed in doing so, looped the passenger aircraft in San Andreas!
Oh and whilst you are at it Rockstar – the James Bond style jet pack was pure genius! Cut and paste lads – cut and paste ;-)

  3. They showed planes being flown in the trailer, didn’t they?

    • Yes

      • Well, they showed planes flying in the trailer – Doesn’t necessarily mean that they were being flown of course, they could just be part of the scenery/world.

However, i too took it as a nod that they will be fly-able (yay, made up words ftw!) in GTA V.

  4. I reckon they mean planes will appear in Bully 2: rioting little scroats edition.

  5. Anythings better than GTA IV.

    • GTA IV best game this gen imo.

      • NOT! (imo) :P

      • I don’t think I’d even call it the best GTA game this gen! ;)

      • GTA IV is the only GTA i haven’t brought myself to finish yet as the constant phone calls from contacts during missions begin to grind my gears.. :$

  6. GTAIV seemed big because it was dense… I certainly never felt it was small.
Looking forward to this next Mar-May.

Although, practically everything is released then.

    • I’m looking forward to exploring some nice terrain in a 4WD, most you could get on IV was over those big rocks on the beach.

  7. Sounds good apart from the “absolutely no ‘beta’ test for the game”. If the online is as iffy as GTA IV and MP3 then why no beta testing?

    • Agreed – QA testing is all well & good, but for online connections you really need to get a beta out into the wild to see how connections of various strengths/types etc get on with it.

I don’t have the time for betas myself, but i know many others that will make time to participate.

    • There’s no real need for the multiplayer in GTA imo and hope it’s not part of GTA V.

      • I had some fantastic moments in the last GTA MP with mates, we didn’t even do anything but just roam the streets blowing stuff up. The actual game I played for a bit and left it, was boring and too samey as the others.

    • I took it to mean there is currently no beta test rather than there won’t be one at all. Probably wrong though.

    • if GTA V MP is like IV, I understand why no open beta. Being able to select an area in the city would result in a huge amount of the city ending up on Youtube and spoil the story. IMO the best part of GTA is exploration, and how the city slowly reveals itself to the player. I’d imagine a vast percentage of beta (read: demo) testers (read:players) would just be running around exploring the city and capturing video instead of actually testing. There’s also no proof that open betas result in a better MP launch… Battlefield 3 had the biggest open beta ever and launched basically broken- and stayed that way for months. As long as R* tells me it’ll be fine- I believe them. IMHO they’ve earned that respect, and if the matchmaking doesn’t work at launch… welll…. ITS GTA!, there’ll be a huge story to finish and the largest open world to explore while R* fix it.

      • Rockstar have not earned that respect IMO.

Yes, i do generally like their games (previous gens GTA’s & Red Dead especially), but many people had issues with the mp on GTA IV & the mp on Max Payne 3 is actually a bit of a joke tbh. Fun when it works of course, but the clarifier being “when it works” (on PS3). When somewhere around half your install base have connection issues of some sort, something is wrong.

Especially when doing something as simple as releasing a bit of DLC splits the userbase even more. That’s an inspired bit of coding. :/

Additionally, i am not sure how you can say that BF3 was ever ‘broken’ – Never once had any real issues with it (at least not that you wouldn’t expect from any multiplayer such as the odd dropped connection etc) & have been playing since release. Never once not got a game when i intended to.

You do have a point with leaks of the beta though.

  8. I think thats abit more than a strong hint there :) good news.

  9. I wonder if GTA4 lacked flyable planes due to Liberty City being modelled on New York and they wanted to avoid causing controversy?

I hope they bring back the jetpack as well as the hydra as that was fun as hell to fly. And i hope each plane will handle differently.

I see Rockstar is taking a leaf out of Bugthesda’s book and are not doing beta tests. Should be fine, i mean what is the worst that can happen. *cough* MP3’s MP*cough*

  10. OK.. here we go for another buggy start… and i dont mean driving a buggy!
