The Hobbit, Peter Jackson’s latest entry into the Lord Of The Rings universe, will now span over three movies instead of the two we’ve all been expecting.
“We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together,” said Jackson moments ago. “In particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale?”
“And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.'”
Jackson suggests that the additional movie will allow for more exposition and backstory, including that of Bilbo, Gandalf, the Dwarves, the rise of the Necromancer and the ultimate Battle of Dol Guldur.
The movie set will now feature more of the additional material from The Lord Of The Rings appendices.
“It has been an unexpected journey indeed,” said Jackson, who only relatively recently fell into the role of Director, “and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, “a tale that grew in the telling.””
The first movie opens this December, with the second the following year. The third film is likely to land in the summer of 2014.
It’s likely that this will also result in more videogames based on The Hobbit.

I’m in two minds. One, the Hobbit is a tiny book, I read it in something like 4 hours once, so I’m not sure where all the material/time is coming from.
On the other hand, Peter Jackson is the god that made the Lord of the Rings into exceptionally good films, so I trust him. I’m a bit conflicted about whether I like it being three films instead of the two, but I’m certain they’ll be amazing.

Absolutely cannot wait for the Hobbit. A bit gutted its now over 3 films but as a huge fan of the LOTR trilogy, I have faith that Jackson and co will make all 3 films epic.

Three movies seems a bit much but i guess it’s in good hands. Then i just need to hold out for the inevitable extended versions..
