UK Sales Charts – Grid 2 #1, Fuse #37

This week’s UK sales chart makes sobering reading for EA, Insomniac and Fuse, which entered the charts at just 37. The game – a third person team-based shooter – is the studio’s first multiplatform release, having previously been exclusively making games for PlayStation consoles.

Codemasters’ Grid 2 enters the charts at the top, however, with FIFA 13, Dead Island: Riptide, Far Cry 3 and Resident Evil Relevations making up the top five. Assassin’s Creed III, Metro: Last Light, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Lego Batman and Tomb Raider complete the top 10.

Despite being in the top slot, Grid 2 sold 30% less than the first game did in the same time period.

Here’s the top twenty:

  1. GRID 2 – CODEMASTERS
  2. FIFA 13 – ELECTRONIC ARTS
  3. DEAD ISLAND: RIPTIDE – KOCH MEDIA
  4. FAR CRY 3 – UBISOFT
  5. RESIDENT EVIL: REVELATIONS – CAPCOM

  1. A known IP with mediocre reviews can still get to number 1.

A new IP with mediocre reviews gets in at number 37

This just shows the power of a brand in the games industry. If you don’t bring your best with a new IP then it’s going to fail.

  2. Can see this sort of thing happening to new IPs a lot next gen unfortunately.
With all these complicated licensing measures being put in place – yes, the PS4 will probably be as bad as the X1 – I can’t see people buying many games each year, meaning lesser-known titles are unlikely to get a look in.
Would be nice to be proven wrong of course…

    • Not too sure about that. Dishonoured sold well last year I think, as well as Last of Us being widely popular if a look at gaming journalism sites proves anything.

To me Fuse just appears bog standard, nothing brilliant. Unlike the two games mentioned, it hasn’t broken in to new territory in any particular way (story/art design), and hasn’t been advertised massively like TLoU or released in a lucrative period (Q4) like Dishonoured.

      • There are exceptions certainly (Dishonored’s success was well-deserved) but overall I really think smaller/new developers are going to struggle more than ever next gen.

      • Yeah the games industry has seen some changes which see a lot of indie or mainstream projects. Although with the new emphasis on independent gaming with Playstation is a big help towards getting smaller devs recognised and into bigger projects. Also the PC ports help a lot, getting small games on to big consumer bases.

But to summarise my last comment, I don’t think new IPs will struggle any time as long as they have have the right formula. Remember Me is more attractive to me at the moment than bog-standard Fuse. The former looks unique, the latter doesn’t.

  3. Well, i wanted to play Overstrike. The FUSE demo was ok, but it felt bland and not what Insomniac are normally about. R&C PS4, im waiting :)

    • I think this is closest to my feelings on the game. They lost me with the change in direction to Fuse and the demo wasn’t enough to win me back.

    • the demo was alright, but i just can’t get over the fact there seemed to be no way to crouch outside of cover.

why would they not have that option?

what kind of training did these people have that taught them that standing bolt upright when you’re out in the open on a battlefield is a good tactic?

  4. Not good all round then.

  5. That is quite surprising really, I think quite a few people went for the digital pre-order with 3xDLC pack bonus, and those sales figures don’t get included in the chart as far as I’m aware. Also with two online top retailers Amazon and Shopto showing overall chart positions for Grid2 as 18th and 9th respectively..
All I can say to that is well done to Codies, they must have excelled in bricks and mortar shop sales…….top job! ;)

    • Yeah, well done Codies. When I first played the game I was a bit disappointed with the handling but after a few races I love it. Who cares about lap times when it’s more fun to drift.

  6. Im really enjoying Grid 2, been looking forward to it for a while.

  7. i guess you need an established brand or to stand out to be a success in the shooter genre these days.
and Fuse didn’t stand out enough.

i can’t help but think the character and humour of what they showed at the start would have done a bit better than the somewhat generic looking game they ended up with, but i guess we’ll never know now.

  8. The reason its 37 is because there has been hardly no advertising for the game, and secondly it looks crap. It doesn’t bring anything new to the genre and looks bland.

    • Couldn’t of put it better myself i rented it from LoveFilm and it will be sent back tomorrow it i am all for new IPs but this plays poorly the whole product seems rushed and the graphics are not even up there with Resistance FoM Insomniac took a huge step backwards with this game.

  9. and prospects for the digital version of Fuse aren’t going to be any better with that ridiculous 60 quid price tag ea have slapped on it.

  10. Never heard of Fuse as no advertising and shooter’s, getting boring and EA is a greedy publisher.
