F2P Shooter Warframe Becomes PS4 Console Exclusive

Digital Extremes’ free-to-play PC shooter Warframe is to become a console exclusive for PlayStation 4. It appears that Sony’s pro-active approach of seeking out PC games and producing them for PS Vita has been expanded to include PlayStation 4.

Creative director Steve Sinclair told IGN that “Sony caught wind of [Warframe], and said, ‘Hey, what do you think of bringing it over to PlayStation 4?’, and we were very surprised to hear that.”

“Sony has been incredibly supportive and available and [PlayStation 4], in my opinion, is incredible to develop for. It is awesome, and I don’t want to speak disparagingly about any existing or prior platforms, but we showed Warframe for the first time to our entire studio, and everyone had their jaws on the floor, how 1080p, silky smooth and beautiful it was.”

“So, I’m really, really enjoying working on the machine.”

The game will make full use of the new DualShock 4 including the touch pad and will be bolstered by extra content each month.

  1. Very good news. I played warframe and i think the DS4 will suit the gameplay very well.

  2. Heard great things about Warframe on PC. It’s good to know that I can download a decent cluster of games without spending a penny on launch day.

  3. Say no to F2P. If this is what the PS4 will become, its possible I’ll end up not getting one.

    • How can you say no to the odd F2P game here and there? I seriously doubt all the publishers are suddenly going to drop traditional games.

I think this looks great and I’m looking forward to getting it when I get my PS4. Smart moves from Sony again

    • Isn’t this more of a multiplayer type thing though for games without single player stories? I guess it would be annoying if BF4 turned out this way.

      • That’s kind of what I’m saying. I would never expect BF4 or CoD to be F2P but it’s good that Sonty is looking outside of the usual market and doing it early for the PS4.

Does anyone know if Planetside 2 is coming to PS4?

      • Yeah, nice one Sonty! ;)

      • Oops lol

        *Sony (obviously)

It’s early in the morning. Leave me alone!

    • I’m not enthused about FTP – just can’t see it providing a satisfying sp experience but i might be proved wrong. I’ll certainly try a few although i’m unlikely to spend a cent on any of them.

    • No chance, Bilbo. F2P gives people like me a genuine chance to try out a vast number of titles (free) and also manage the money I want to spend on it. Nothing’s sucked me in and the only thing I’ve spent money on has seriously deserved it as I was pouring decent amounts of time into a game I was enjoying and saw my transactions as a way to thank the developers. Nothing wrong with that, fella, surely?

  4. Cool. This looks like a bit of fun to be had too.
I’m beginning to lose track of the PS4 games which will be released already. I did just notice a ‘release date’ nav button on the ole playstationfour site which is cool. Anyone know if that will list games as well as the console once dates are announced?

  5. Clever move by Sony in my opinion, f2p is a growing market plus with the ps4 being a static platform, unlike a pc, those devs can make a good go of it. Looks fun this too

  6. I think i like the fact this will be a generation when if i’m board and i have no money to buy a new game. i will be able to try a new game in the form of free to play.
    I’m excited.

  7. Sony seems to be doing all the right things for the PS4 and to stay/get ahead of MS.

  8. It’s cool to see SONY getting Exclusive stuff(Games & DLC etc etc) ‘BUT'(isn’t there always a ‘BUT’) :D Like this Gen(PS3 Gen) they ignore the MASSIVE games like GTA & COD & FIFA & MS seem to back the biggest games :-/ & that ‘DOES’ matter in the end. So come next week i bet MS get something MGS5 & GTA & BF(i bet you SONY will lose out on that game to) etc etc.

    • True, fella. I do wonder how Sony can match Microsoft’s bullish advertising might when we see them rolling out the massive franchises at the likes of E3 but obviously Sony don’t want it to be just about those and go head-to-head in a bidding war for timed releases. They want to make it all about the games, with a breadth and depth that will serve them in the long-run. Hell, even hardened 360 owners know they’ve been somewhat neglected in the last 3 years with software and that smarts when investing in a new console.

    • Bottom line is that Sony doesn’t have anywhere near the money of MS but at the same time companies aren’t going to miss out on sales for one console. They may secure some exclusive content but ultimately a few extra missions on GTA isn’t going to persuade most people to buy an X1

  9. Looks like a fun game (& I’m normally not so keen on this genre).

  10. I think these free to play games could be a perfect distraction for rainy weekends with no other games to play.
