Has Toys “R” Us Outed Next Gen Release Dates?

Toys “R” Us went live with some big news yesterday, listing actual release dates for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launches.

It’s something sure to knock a few noses out of joint at Microsoft and Sony HQ, if correct, but apparently Microsoft will be hitting the shelves first. Toys “R” Us place the Xbox One release date on November 29th, whilst the PlayStation 4 saunters in on December 13th.

So far, so rumour, but BT Games reached out to all parties involved, and got the following, rather intriguing statements.

First up, Toys “R” Us simply stated:

I can confirm this information has been given direct from our suppliers and is accurate.

This was followed by Sony’s flat:

We haven’t made any announcements other than coming this holiday season.

Microsoft completely fails, in the contest to give the shortest possible statement, but gives an equally dry:

We have announced that Xbox One will launch this November, but have not shared any further details. It’s common practice for retailers to use placeholder dates for pre-order items without an official launch date. Please stay tuned to news.xbox.com, where we share the latest official details about all things Xbox One.

No other retailer has, to the best of my knowledge, done with anything other than an obvious place holder date, so on this one Toys “R” Us stand alone.

EDIT: As noted in the comments below, both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 release dates are identical to those posted on Very.co.uk, which I think you’ll agree is Very interesting.

Naturally, you’ll still want to take this with a pinch of salt. A “no comment” in this instance gives next to nothing away, and we’ll no doubt get the official word at Gamescom in August. Until then, I’d advise that you just keep putting cash to one side as and when you can, if you’re planning on buying on day one.

  1. bollocks. BF4 comes out in October and I think December 14th is too later for the “holiday season” for Sony. Maybe correct for Xbox One though.

  2. Highly doubt this, Sony need to cut in before Microsoft (or up to a week or two later, but not in December) in order to get ahead, and vice versa.

    • It literally is two weeks later than MS, if Toy’s R Us are right.

  3. I thought PS4 was due on 22nd Nov.

Either way, I don’t care, I can’t play what I don’t have and have more than enough to keep me occupied on PS3 and Vita!

  4. December is far too late, even the end of November is cutting it a bit fine. I reckon early to mid November for both consoles.

  5. I’m sure those two dates have been mentioned before by a different retailer.
I still think some time in October for PS4.

    • I’m quietly optimistic for an October PS4 launch too ;)

      • I agree here. DICE/EA have said on more than one occasion and actually have it on their website its releasing on the 29th October. They wouldn’t release a game without a console being around, unless thats just for PC?

  6. I was in GAME the other day and the poster said Xbox one November, PS4 Christmas. So could be around then seems a bit late though.

  7. Very, the catalogue shop, are showing the same dates if I remember correctly?

    • Good spot. :)

    • Very have had the 13th December since they launched their product page a couple of months ago

  8. I’m sure we’ll see both consoles in November. Sony may even do something late October, December is just too late.

  9. So PS4 on Friday 13th? No way. They’re already superstitious about the number 4.

  10. Why is 13th December ‘too late’? Too late for what? I’m relieved actually. Gives me some time to actually find the money to pay for my damn pre-order!

    • Yeah, December sounds about right. No point launching if the key games (Killzone, DC) aren’t ready.
