BF4 “Battlescreen” Locked To Next-Gen Hardware

DICE has confirmed that some of its updated Battlelog features won’t be available to those playing Battlefield 4 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Speaking with Engadget, Battlelog assistant producer, Jesper Nielsen, stated that Battlescreen is locked to both PC and next-gen consoles. This is mainly due to the way Battlelog transfers live data via the web, with current hardware unable to keep up whilst juggling every other aspect of online matches:

Battlelog is powered by the web, and that has a lot of implications. There are a lot of different things you can do, things you can do faster, rather than building stuff in native code… It’s going to be a lot easier for us to actually update things from the in-game Battlelog than would otherwise be the case. You’d have to do patches normally; here we can actually do things almost by the flick of a finger.

Battlescreen allows players to view a map and other information on their tablet whilst in-game, doubling up as a interactive tactical display. For example, you can tap certain areas of the map to activate checkpoints for squad-mates, triggering an instant response between the app and game itself.

Regular stat-tracking and mobile loadouts will still be available on current-gen version, though Battlescreen is perhaps the service’s biggest innovation to date and one EA will no doubt continue to push.

  1. Off topic but don’t know where to post this.

Is there any way to stop the “Latest Posts” list on the home screen stop hiding some posts? Seemingly they are selected at random and I have to click on the “Show all posts” every visit. First world problem (as the hipsteres say) I know but still…

    • yes me too, very frustrating. It feels like its hard trying to find the latest posts on the new home page.

      • Displays the latest on my Windows Phone just fine… but on the full-fat website I can see that items that appear on the right (in the big fancy boxes) get omitted from the list on the left.

Not sure what flags one to appear on the right, but once it does it gets hidden on the left.

Best check both, or get used to clicking that ‘show all posts’ button (unless they set it so it’s always expanded)

      • Will let Al know ;)

    • first thing i click is “show all posts” every time i visit which is a lot more now the rss feed does not update properly.

    • It’s not hiding them – the featured stories appear over on the right, that’s all. We thought it was pointless showing stories twice, but if the community think it’s better, then we can change it.

      • Thanks for the reply and explanation, Mr Inglis. I would prefer to have them all in the “Latest Posts” column.

      • I would rather have latest posts include all posts. I personally feel the feature posts bit on the right takes up too much space too.

  2. Battlescreen I must admit looks great, but I bet there will be massive problems with it when the game is first released.

    • Seems to be a trend at the moment for this type of secondscreen.

Wonder how it’ll pad out with Smart Phones, Tablets and Vitas?
Personally love the concept (did a bit of it during Mass Effect 3), but does the ideal console setup of 2014 look like: PS4 and Vita and iPhone* and iPad*??

Can see all four being very useful when playing something like Watch Dogs.

      (*other devices are available)

  3. The concept of Battlescreen looks awesome, however I still fail to see it stacking up to what it could be when it’s released. This is probably more down to the players and users of it, but I think it will be a gimmick that’s quickly forgotten, just like in other games such as The Division.
