Payday 2 Is Profitable Pre-Launch

With little under a week to go before launch, it’s been revealed that Overkill Software’s Payday 2 has already turned a profit for publisher 505 Games, solely from pre-orders.

In an official statement, Bo Andersson-Klint, CEO of Overkill’s parent company, Starbreeze Software, had the following to say: “Starbreeze today has once again demonstrated that our strategy to invest in our own brands is correct.”

“We now look forward to royalties that can ensure the company’s development of its own IP to come. For Payday 2 to generate revenue to the company six days before release is, of course, very unusual for games of this size and strengthens the long-term vision of our strategy.”

The game, a sequel to 2011’s co-operative shooter Payday: The Heist, will be available for PC gamers via Steam for Windows next Tuesday, with PSN and Xbox releases following a couple of days later.

  1. Very impressive, I still haven’t picked up the first one even though I loved the demo!

As a side note, I’m not sure if anyone saw the producer’s AMA on reddit, but I love how they’ve focused on making the game rather than marketing it, it would be great if more Devs took this approach: http://www.reddit.com/r/paydaytheheist/comments/1g74x7/i_am_almir_listo_producer_of_payday_2_ama/caheluv

  2. Bloody brilliant news! Imagine any game worth its salt selling like that and starting to return a profit just as it’s about to launch. The peace of mind that brings the company (and its investors) must be almost unquantifiable from an emotional perspective, let alone the financial aspect.

So very pleased for them. Here’s to a rosy future and some more great IP.

  3. That’s either a lot of pre-orders or the game didn’t cost that much to make. I wonder which one it is :)
