Sony Announce Worldwide PS4 Sales Projections

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House has discussed the sales projections for the Playstation 4.

Speaking at the company’s Tokyo Game Show keynote, House revealed that Sony are aiming to sell 5 million PS4 consoles worldwide by March 2014. To put this in perspective, during the same launch period – November 2006 to March 2007 – the PlayStation 3 managed 3.55 million units.

The PS3 famously came with a hefty price tag at launch which hindered the early sales figures, but Sony’s targets seem ambitious given that the PS4 does not launch in Japan until February, 2 months later than other Asian territories, and 3 months behind the UK and US markets.

“Our first priority is to satisfy our core users, but the possibilities of the PS4 will not end there, the PS4 will bring people together” said House, “Sony is now setting out to create a more vibrant entertainment eco-system.”

Whilst Microsoft’s own forecasts for Xbox One sales are currently unknown, the firm’s Senior Vice President Of Interactive Entertainment Business, Yusuf Medhi, recently told Official Xbox Magazine “most industry experts think the next generation will get upwards of about 400 million units to potentially upwards of a billion units”.

The PlayStation 4 launches in the UK on November 29th, and will set you back around £350.

  1. Er PS4 is launching in the UK on 29th Nov, its out in the US on the 15th.

    • They’ve changed the date. Didn’t you hear?

  2. It launches in the UK on the 29th September I thought?

    • sorry meant 29th November, 15th US. Ah I see someone else mentioned that.

Good news for Sony anyway with a higher prediction. I reckon they could meet that.

  3. My mistake, got my UK and US launches mixed. 29th it is.

  4. Lovely projections. Lofty but achievable considering how the console has been received so far. Not only that but Sony’s own reputation in the gaming arena appears to be very strong right now.

  5. Thats impressive. I wonder if they thought it would be as popular as it turned out to be.

    • The way they’ve changed their philosophy since PS3 I’m not surprised expectations are high.

  6. Basically for the first few months they’ll sell what they can build.
Hopefully they can keep the production line going and there isn’t another natural disaster or something!

Hopefully they keep they momentum going with superb games. PS3 started poor and ended well. If PS4 starts well and goes on like the PS3 … well then it’ll be a good generation!
