PlayStation Mobile Next-Gen Companion App Detailed

It has been announced that the PlayStation 4 launch will be accompanied by a re-launched PlayStation mobile app.

In a post on the official PlayStation Blog, SCE Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida has discussed how the redesigned PlayStation app will act as a companion to the next-gen home console, allowing you to “take the PlayStation experience with you”.

[drop2]The app will be freely available for iOS or Android and include features such as comparing trophy counts, messaging and reading the latest PlayStation news – although why you would do that anywhere other than TSA is beyond me.

“There are a variety of things you can do with it. You can connect to your PlayStation profile and send messages — even voice messages — to friends between your smartphone and PS4,” explained Yoshida.

New features of the app allow far more social interaction including the ability to view captured footage and live streaming gameplay. If you like the game you are watching you can click through to the integrated mobile store, confirm your purchase, and voilà – it’ll be waiting for you when you get home.

Perhaps most exciting feature is that the new PlayStation app features its own native “PS4 Link”, which will be open to everyone, from AAA to indie.

“There are many big publishers creating their own apps for their games, like Watch Dogs or Battlefield, and that’s great” Yoshida commented. “But smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application, like drawing software for example, so that you don’t have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It’s open to all PS4 developers to use.”

Yoshida has since tweeted confirmation that the PS4 Link functionality will be coming to the PlayStation Vita as part of the next system update, excellent news for those who might be considering a PS4 / Vita bundle this Christmas.

The PlayStation Mobile App is expected to land here in the UK around the last week in November, ready for the PlayStation 4 launch November 29th.

  1. The existing app is next to useless so I hope this one is a bit more useful. Sounds good though.

  2. Sounds great! Looking forward to having a reason to use my iPhone/iPad with my PS4. :) Also, with regards to iOS applications… Sure would love to see a native TSA one! If only I had some spare time and knowledge of how TSA’s php backend worked… *hint* *hint*. ;)

  3. Take the Playstation experience with me? What, like stream my PS4 games to my iPhone? Oh no, just more marketing/advertising bollocks.

    • I’ll be happy as someone who can only use my phone for Internet at work if this means I can check the store and start my downloads while I’m sat on the toilet at work I’ll be very happy.

  4. Not sure how useful this will be, except downloading stuff so it’s there when you get home.

  5. Viewing live stream of a friend’s game from anywhere and second screen for games for things like inventory and maps sounds good.

  6. This looks like it could be really useful.

  7. I’m excited for this, plus it’s great that Sony are doing this for the indies too who don’t have millions at their disposal to create second screen apps. Browsing the store and queuing downloads of games and demos, watching what friends are up to etc all sounds good.

Hopefully it also integrates the PS blogs and with full functionality – the PS app on my Sony Xperia Z doesn’t always show images, hyperlnks don’t work, can’t view videos and have to sign in to PSN each time. I hope these all get rectified.
