PlayStation Store Update: 18/12/13 – Minecraft, Pinball and Broken Sword

Well this is quite surprising, to say the least, as this week’s PS Store Update is actually quite a busy one.

The headline act is, of course, The Walking Dead Season 2, which is out today for £3.99/€4.99 as a single episode or £15.99/€19.99 for the season. You can catch Blair’s review here.

is an epic showdown between Zen Pinball 2 and Pinball Arcade, as they both bring their high scores, tables and flippers to the PlayStation 4. Both also start off as a free download with a single table bundled in to test your skills on, but further tables will see you reaching into your pocket. On both fronts there are efforts to ease the transition, though neither uses Cross-Buy.

Zen Pinball 2 lets you import your existing PS3/Vita tables to the PS4 version, but you should be aware that this process does not work in reverse. For more details, look here. Meanwhile, if you own all of the Season One tables in Pinball Arcade for PS3/Vita, then you can get either Season One packs for half price. That should make them £1.99/€2.49 instead of £3.99/€4.99.

Backgammon Blitz brings another real world game to the digital realms, as it reaches PS4 for £5.29/€6.99 and Vita for £4.99/€6.19. It’s not just a digitised version of the classic game though, and brings a bunch of twists and tricks to the formula, to spice things up.

Minecraft comes to the PlayStation 3 this week, releasing for £12.99/€18.99, and bundling a bunch of trophies, four player split-screen support in addition to the eight player online mode, and both Creative and Survival modes to play with. Though I’m sure Kris and Tuffcub would rather go dinosaur hunting in Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter HD, out on PS3 for £7.99/€9.99, or to relax with a fluffy kitten in Aabs Animals, at £3.19/€3.99…

The PS Vita gets a fresh release of Age Of Zombies for £3.99/€4.99, BIT.TRIP Presents… Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien for £5.49/€6.99, a 9-in-1 PS Minis bundle for £2.39/€2.99, and its own release of Broken Sword 5: The Serpents Curse – Episode 1, for £9.99/€12.99. I’ve actually yet to play my kickstarter version, but I’m tempted to just get it on Vita and play this in bed over the holidays, made more tempting by the 20% PS+ discount to £7.99 and the bundle pricing that includes next year’s second episode for £15.99, also with a PS+ discount to £12.79.

There’s also an A-Men 1+2 bundle at £9.99/€12.99, Eufloria HD for £9.99/€12.99, MotoGP 13 Compact at £7.99/€9.99 and Foosball in a bundle with all its DLC for £2.39/€2.99 or bundled with Atomic Ninjas for £3.19/€3.99.

Finally, it’s a healthy week for DLC, as LBP’s DC Comics DLC arrives this week. There’s a season pass for £19.99/€24.99, which does feel a bit much but includes the level packs for LBP2 and LBP Vita (this coming next year) and all of the 20 costumes… I guess it depends on just how much you want to be Superman…

For now, you can get him for £1.59/€1.99 individually, or as part of the DC Comic Costume Pack for £4.79/€5.99. The Premium Level Pack for LBP2 is £5.49/€6.99.

Defiance’s Arbreaker DLC arrives on EU PS3s today, for £5.99/€7.49 or in the season pass, Battlefield 4 China Rising gets its wider release for £11.99 on PS3 or £12.79 on PS4, while Assassin’s Creed IV gets the first of its DLC packs. Freedom Cry features Adéwalé’s story picking up 15 years after the events of the main game, as he fights to free slaves in Haiti. This too is part of a season pass, or comes on its own for £7.99/€9.99, for PS4 and PS3.

Be careful with a lot of this week’s releases and DLC packs, because they seem to live outside of the Cross-Buy scheme, and so you will need to be sure of what platform you are buying for.

  1. I’m tempted by The Walking Dead season 2 season pass, although I think I may wait until all episodes are out before I buy it. That’s what I did with the first season and I think I probably enjoyed it more by being able to play straight through all the episodes together.

I’ll definitely be skipping Minecraft. I know it’s massively popular, but I just don’t see the appeal.
