The Last Of Us is one of the most commercially and critically successful new IPs from the last generation, with the game itself receiving our award for Game Of The Year 2013. Since that success there have been a lot of rumours surrounding the a potential sequel, as well as a movie, with the last bit of news regarding The Last Of Us 2 saying it was in production and would be out next year. Now Neil Druckmann, creative director at Naughty Dog, has spoken to Eurogamer about such a move.
“We just wrapped up Left Behind, and Bruce Straley, the game director, and I have been doing this for over four years now. So it’s just time for a break, and to recharge the batteries. We have started brainstorming some stuff. To be honest, some of them are sequel ideas, and some of them are brand new IP – we’ve spent the last few weeks brainstorming new IP. So we have to get some good steps and see.
It’s kind of like how we approached Left Behind. Can we tell people a story that’s really worth telling, and that’s not repeating itself? And if we can’t, where can we get inspired – what is something that’s really going to challenge us, and push storytelling in this medium forward?”
If Naughty Dog do decide to a The Last Of Us Part Two it would be interesting to see the approach they take, or if not then what new IP could come next from the studio.

I want more!

If they do then it HAS to be different characters in the same universe. I can’t see how a direct sequel for Ellie and Joel would work without feeling like a forced cash-in.
Personally I think they should take confidence from its success and strike out with more new IP. They know how well they can do with that.

If Naughty Dog do a sequel with Ellie and Joel it will be because they feel they still have things they want to explore with them, I don’t think they’d just cash in. I have faith in their artistic integrity.

Hmm, still need to get the enthusiasm to go back and finish the original. I just struggle to see what all the hype is about

The Last of Us was great but I’d much rather have a new IP now. Something fresh, new series for a new console.

The Last of Us should be left behind for a while as it’s such a self contained game. A non-direct sequel set at the early years of the outbreak or after the events of the game would be very cool, but not yet. I’d prefer a new IP, hopefully with a sci-fi setting.

Something’s don’t need a sequel just like how Independence Day don’t need a sequel but yet they making one.
If they do TLOU 2 it’s likely to go the UC3 way not so good

The only way I could see it working is a) It’s set far in the future, b) It’s based on other characters or c) It’s a prequel.

The fact that Naughty Dog even have these meetings means the best will rise to the top. The question wasn’t “how do we make the most money?”. Gaw’d bless ’em!
