Sony Santa Monica Suffers Layoffs, Related To Stig Asmussen’s New Title

Sony has confirmed that God of War studio, Sony Santa Monica, has been the subject of layoffs due to shifting priorities among the company’s worldwide studios. Sony has issued a statement regarding the situation.

SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio. This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS. We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted.

It is unclear of how many people have been affected but some details have emerged as now former employees speak. One of those people is Jonathan Hawkins who was a lead level designer, and had worked on the original God of War trilogy. It has become clear that the IP affected was under Stig Asmussen’s leadership. He was the director for God of War III, and had also worked on the other games in the series bar Ascension.


We don’t know what that IP was so it could have been anything from God of War to something new that wasn’t ready to be revealed yet. It’s a blow to see a talented group affected like this, and TSA would like to wish all those who were laid off luck in finding new jobs soon.

    • Different to the virtual reality game they are supposedly developing ? Or the same thing.

      • Uncertain, this game shouldn’t require VR. But perhaps it supported it?

    • Apparently it was too similar to Destiny…
      Can there ever be enough Desiny-esque games? I say no.
      Instead we will probably get God of War 37… >_>

  3. Its a damn shame when so many people get laid off, best of luck to them finding new work.

    As for Santa Monica’s future, they’re now roughly the same sort of size as Naughty Dog and it seemed like (From what I’ve gathered from internet browsing) they were working on three big titles, one of which was the cancelled project. They’ll obviously carry on with God Of War but hopefully still continue studio cultivation and new IP. Something must have gone wrong here to “justify” cancelling it.

    • Exactly. SSM wouldnt release a crap game, it’s been canclled for a reason.
